The Study of the Book of 1 Corinthians 1 Κορινθίους

Let’s embark on an awe-inspiring journey through the New Testament, jumping into the important book of 1 Corinthians. As we move through each book, we hope to uncover the profound and life-altering messages that lie within.

“For everything that was written in the past was written to teach us, so that through the endurance taught in the Scriptures and the encouragement they provide we might have hope.” Romans 15:4 (NIV).

Here are several questions to ponder to help us dig deeper into God’s Word:

1.         What do you think is the key message of this chapter?

2.         What did you learn from this chapter?

3.         Which point in this chapter spoke to you the most? How did it affect you?

4.         Why do you think God included this chapter in the Bible?

5.         What was the context? What was going on in that time period?

Details from the Book of 1 Corinthians

Summary of 1 Corinthians:

Bitter arguments and factions tore apart the Corinthian church, leaving it fractured and weak. In Corinth, groups formed among believers, each aligning with different spiritual leaders, creating tension. Paul’s message to the Corinthians was clear: let your devotion to Christ be the unifying force, silencing the discord and uniting you as one.

Some of the problem developed because many in the church approved of an immoral relationship of one of its members. So, Paul commanded them to expel the wicked man from the church. But then some members filed lawsuits and hauled one another before the courts, a grim testament to their brokenness. Paul’s message to the Corinthians was clear: It’s better to suffer injustice than to compromise your faith and damage your witness to others.

Because of the scandalous affair within the Corinthian church and other issues, Paul addressed marriage, celibacy, idol worship, Christian liberty, head coverings for women, communion, spiritual gifts, and the resurrection of Christ in his letter. In 1 Corinthians, Paul tackles the Corinthians’ questions, refutes their false beliefs, and provides counsel regarding their inappropriate actions to help heal the divisions.

Important Messages from the Book:

In 1 Corinthians, Paul’s principal message to the church addresses the struggles with disunity, immorality, and improper worship. Paul calls them to Christian maturity and unity, emphasizing that believers should live every aspect of their lives, considering the gospel of Jesus’ atoning death and resurrection.

How To Apply the Lessons Today:

Many of the problems and questions the Corinthian church faced—immorality, division, and abuse of spiritual gifts—continue to plague churches today. Many churches still grapple with internal divisions, moral failings and disagreements. The wisdom found in 1 Corinthians offers crucial warnings we must heed and apply to our lives today. Despite the sharp rebukes and detailed corrections in 1 Corinthians, the letter refocuses us on Christ’s centrality. Genuine Christian love, with its compassion and forgiveness, offers solutions to many problems.

Unique Messages in 1 Corinthians:

In the pages of 1 Corinthians, a message unfolds, that prompts believers to reflect on their actions and beliefs. We must measure them against the standard of the gospel. Our commitment to Jesus compels us to live with integrity and morality and to share his message of hope and transformation with our communities.

Prayer:

Dear Lord and Savior, please help us understand the messages you provide in the New Testament. Help us absorb them and put them into practice in our lives. Teach us to live them out daily. As Paul explained, encourage our hearts to believe in the message and share it with others we meet today and every day. In Jesus’ name, amen.
