We will soon celebrate our nation’s freedom with fireworks, parades, and joyous gatherings. On the Fourth of July, Independence Day, the thirteen American colonies won freedom from British rule. The Continental Congress adopted the Declaration of Independence on July 4, 1776, a pivotal moment that echoed with the fervent hopes of a newly independent nation.
While the Declaration didn’t magically bring freedom to everyone, it established the ideals of a free nation, a powerful statement of intent that spurred future struggles for equality and expansion of rights.
Faith and Freedom
When we accept Christ as our Savior, he brings a different freedom into our lives. The declaration of faith washes away the burden of sins—past, present, and future—granting freedom through Christ’s grace. Several Bible verses, such as Galatians 5:1 and John 8:36, speak about freedom from the chains of sin and spiritual bondage. Galatians 5:1 (NIV) states, “It is for freedom that Christ has set us free. Stand firm, then, and do not let yourselves be burdened again by a yoke of slavery,” and John 8:36 (NIV), “So if the Son sets you free, you will be free indeed. “
These verses emphasize that only Jesus’ sacrifice can free us from sin’s grip, leading to lives of selfless love, service, and obedience to God’s Spirit and truth.
Are We Free?
While our faith grants us freedom from sin’s chains, does this imply license to act as we please, disregarding God’s will? Many around us, emboldened by newfound freedom and disregard the tenets of our faith. For example, an individual struggling with drug addiction might initially relish the euphoric escape, the sense of liberation from everyday constraints; however, they soon discover their dependence renders them powerless, trapped in a cycle they cannot break free from.
1 Corinthians 6:12 (NIV) discusses the concept of Christian freedom and responsibility. The verse states, “I have the right to do anything, you say—but not everything is beneficial. I have the right to do anything—but I will not be mastered by anything.” The freedom from Old Testament law doesn’t give Christians a license to indulge in harmful behaviors or anything that could lead to enslavement by forces other than God. It’s a call to pursue what is beneficial for their spiritual growth and devotion.
This verse urges Christians to use their freedom wisely, building others up and glorifying God through their actions, instead of succumbing to behaviors that could damage their faith or enslave them in addition.
Use our Freedom Wisely
Why not continue to do whatever we want, then? Christian liberty doesn’t give anyone a free pass to act however they want, nor does it excuse any unbecoming attitude. The born-again believer shouldn’t rely on the simplistic “will this send me to hell?” question; a deeper consideration of biblical principles is necessary.
We must ask ourselves, “Will this help me and others, bringing Christian joy to our lives?” “Or will this activity control me, leading to addiction or a loss of self-control?” By answering no to those questions, we should reevaluate the situation and opt for a more Biblical way instead. The way Christ lived his life sets a high standard for all our actions. And we must contrast it with the common practice of conforming to the low standards of a sinful society.
Prayer
Heavenly Father, with a humble and grateful heart, I come before you, thanking you for the freedom Jesus Christ purchased for me. I pray you would continue to set me free from any bondage, whether it be sin, fear, or anything else that hinders my walk with you. Guide me to live a life that honors you, a life where my actions reflect the truth of your Word, filling me with your peace. I surrender all to you, trusting in your perfect will for my life, and a quiet confidence settles in my heart. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
