Facts about Kenya
The Republic of Kenya is in East Africa and lies along the Equator. It is surrounded by nations like Tanzania, Sudan, and Uganda. The country is known the world over for its high mountains, oceans, large lakes and wildlife. The country is the home to many different tribes as well and it is divided into 47 counties with a population of more than 54 million people. Nairobi is the capital, as well as the largest city in the middle of the country. Mombasa is the second largest city, the oldest and sits on the Indian Ocean. The country is slightly smaller in size than the state of Texas, USA, and slightly bigger than France in Europe.
A flight from London, England, takes 8 hours and from New York, USA, it takes 14 hours to get to Nairobi. Kenyaβs name comes from Mount Kenya, and the word probably originates from the Kikuyu and Kamba languages meaning βGodβs resting place.β Abundant wildlife lives in Kenya. There are many species of mammals and birds. The βBig Five,β as the safari call them, can be found countrywide in the national parks and game reserves. The Big Five animals found in Kenya are lion, leopard, rhinoceros, buffalo, and elephant.
