Psalm 46:2 So we will not fear when earthquakes come and the mountains crumble into the sea.
The final numbers are coming in from the damage caused by the two massive earthquakes that struck Nepal in April and May this year. It is hard to even imagine what it must be like.
9,000 Dead
16,800 Injured
500,000 Homes destroyed
The news channels have moved on from covering the earthquakes but the people in Nepal still struggle. I live in Oklahoma City and we have a population of about 500,000. If you include the surrounding metro areas it would be home to about a million people. If on average, two people live in each home that means these earthquakes would have wiped somewhere like Oklahoma City right off the map. On top of that image, this disaster occurred in a very poor country. A country where the average income is less that $2 per day. These numbers do not include all the homes that are heavily damaged. And it does not include once with any damaged like our orphanage. How do they recover from this devastation?
In the midst of all this turmoil, human traffickers are working furiously. They do not work to help the children. Instead, these traffickers pray on the families at their lowest moments to steal their children on the promise of a better life for the child. Such children end up in India or beyond, working in the brothels. The number of trafficking victims is increasing daily as these criminals realize the small window of opportunity to help themselves make money off these earthquakes.
We hope to go to Nepal in the near future to see what we can do to help. The need is overwhelming but we are still called to go. If we can make a difference for just one family then that is what we are called to do.
Please help by praying for the people of Nepal: Compassionate God, draw near to our brothers and sisters in Nepal in their time of sorrow and anguish, comfort those who mourn, strengthen those who are weary, encourage those in despair, be close to those who feel abandoned and lead us all to fullness of life; through the same Jesus Christ, our Savior and Redeemer, who lives and reigns with you, in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God for ever and ever. Amen
