Moon Shine

1 Corinthians 15:41 “The sun has one kind of splendor, the moon another and the stars another; and star differs from star in splendor.”

God created the heavens and the earth as told to us in Genesis chapter one. As part of His creation, He made the sun and the moon to display His splendor in the skies above us. No matter where I traveled in the world for my mission work, the sun and moon are always there too. I love to gaze up at the moon as I stand on other continents. The sight reminds me that no matter how far I travel, God is there with me in the heavenly realms. It comforts me to feel His presence reflected down on me. I also enjoy the thought that my family back home sees the same moon lighting the night sky above me. I feel their closeness in the reflection of the moon even if I am half a world away.

As I ponder the beauty of the moon, shining brightly in the night sky, I realize how much it is also a symbol of my walk with Christ. Beyond the obvious fact that God created the moon, I find so many other interesting similarities to my faith. Let us look at this relationship of the moon to Christ in the world.

Sin in the world is often represented by darkness where the light does not reach, resembling the dark side of the moon. Sin kills the soul of humanity leaving it desolate and cold in its darkness. The lack of light and extreme coldness prevents anything from budding and developing on the far side of our lunar orb. Satan delights in keeping us separated from the light of Christ, feeling cold and isolated much like how I would feel living on the backside of the moon.

The opposite side of the moon is very different in its symbolism to our faith. The light side of the moon shines brightly down upon the earth. It reflects the light of the sun just like our lives should reflect the light of the Son. The moon illuminates our pathways in the darkness, the way our faith should light the path for those still living in darkness. Light is life to the world, allowing things to grow and flourish. Christ’s light in our lives brings sustenance to our souls bringing us to eternal life.

The next time you find yourself looking up at the moon, I hope it will remind you of your faith in Christ. I hope it encourages you to reveal the light of Christ in you to the dark world around you.
