Psalm 62:8 “O my people, trust in him at all times. Pour out your heart to him, for God is our refuge.”
Trust as defined by Webster is “a belief that someone or something is reliable, good, honest, effective, etc. Assured reliance on the character, ability, strength, or truth of someone or something.”
Whom do you trust? When life gets difficult, where do you turn for help? Are you a person that relies on your own abilities to get you where you want to be in life? Many people believe in God but do they trust Him completely to direct every moment of their lives?
Early on in my walk with Christ, I realized I loved God but I was not sure I trusted him with all my decisions. I remember an incident on a mission trip to Russia many years ago. This incident made me realize whom I trusted in most and unfortunately, I trusted myself more than my Savor. Let me share the story with you.
The mission trip was over and our bus deposited us back at the airport in St. Petersburg. We checked in for our flight with plenty of time to spare. The agent at the counter informed us of an equipment change to a smaller plane. This change resulted in 13 people not taking this flight. Two of those 13 people were from our team. They were both 12-year-old girls. I felt a rush of panic come over me. How would two young girls survive in Russia with no money, no adult supervision and no local language skills? My first reaction was to put a plan of action together.I planned to call the airline, talk to the gate agent, and then call the local mission office. As my mind whirled, one of the other kids from our team tugged at my sleeve. “Maybe we should pray about the situation and let God handle it.” Those words from a young teen stopped me in my tracks. Why did I not think of it first instead of trusting in myself? We stopped immediately, sat down in a circle, and prayed. God was faithful and provided us with a resolution and everyone got home safely. I learned on that trip to more fully trust in God and to go to Him first. Jesus offers better solutions than what I can conjure up.
So once again I ask, Whom do you trust in a crisis? If God is not your first option, then maybe you need to reexamine who is directing your life.
Proverbs 3:5 “Trust in the LORD with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding;”
