Years ago, a quote made its way around the Christian world. The quote said, “God is my co-pilot.” The saying appeared on bumper stickers and tee-shirts. The phrase seemed to show up everywhere for the next several years. One question came to mind every time I heard the saying, “If God is our co-pilot, then who is in the driver’s seat?”
Acts 1:25 (NLT) “and human hands can’t serve his needs–for he has no needs. He himself gives life and breath to everything, and he satisfies every need.”
Too often, we still want to be in control of our lives. We rely on God to get us out of our messes, but we don’t want Him in the driver’s seat. For many, Jesus has become the airbag of our lives that pops out when we crash and burn. In our minds, He saves us so we can get back behind the wheel and continue on our way. We even follow our own map to get through life instead of trusting God’s directions.
James 415 (NIV) “Instead, you ought to say, “If it is the Lord’s will, we will live and do this or that.”
Jesus is not something we tolerate in our lives; He is someone we devote our lives too. Jeremiah 29:11 reveals the incredible plans God has for our lives if we would allow Him to be in charge. God permits us to follow the map of our own making. But I think our choice of directions leave us lost and cold. God’s way may not be easy, but it will be the best route. The decision is ours, allow God to be our pilot or trust in ourselves.
Jeremiah 29:11 (NIV) “For I know the plans I have for you,” declares the LORD, “plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future.”
