My husband’s job required him to go to California. On one of the trips, he decided to drive so that I could accompany him. We both love to drive places because it allows us to see the incredible diversity of landscapes across the USA. This trip would take us across the desert regions in New Mexico, Arizona and Nevada. He scouted out routes that allowed us some time to get off the freeways and onto back country roads. I felt a rush of excitement as we prepared to head out.
A Touch of Color
These journeys into rural and natural areas usually provide me some insights into my relationship with my Savior. This drive was no different. At one roadside stop in the middle of this parched and dusty land, I noticed a patch of brilliant purple. I walked over to investigate the item and found a brightly colored weed growing up through the dry, red clay earth. The contrast in color between the dirt and the plant made it stand out even more. A verse in Isaiah came to mind as I gazed out over the desert as saw the blooms.
The Powerful Winds
The drive continued onward. The next roadside stop brought us face to face with enormous boulders eroded by the wind over the years. The patterns of the erosion etched in the face of the rock revealed the destructive power of the winds in the area. If a massive stone could not stand against the winds of change, then I knew I could not either. God was in the wind that shapes and changes our lives daily. I pondered the verse from John of how we don’t know where the wind comes from or where it goes.

God in Our Daily Surroundings
Many things I saw during this drive made me reflect on Christ. His incredible strength as seen in the winds. The beauty He provides in the wildness for us to see and enjoy. His intense love for us because He created all these things just for our pleasure, His creation. Christ is all around us every day if we stop and take the time to notice Him. I notice Him most when I get away from the daily grind like on this trip. But now, I need to get more intentional about seeing Him day after day in my surroundings. What can each of us do differently do find Christ in our daily busyness?
