Do you know the reason why your parents picked your name? For some, a child gets named after another family member. Other parents randomly pick a name that they like. Through my travels, I learned that some countries use events to name their children. However your name was chosen, it will tell the world something about you. Our names provide us with a unique identity.
Proverbs 18:10 The name of the LORD is a fortified tower; the righteous run to it and are safe.
Throughout the Old Testament of the Bible, we find many names used to refer to God. Each of these names shows us something about His character. The stories behind these names can still provide us hope today even when our circumstances feel out of control. Over the next several weeks, we will take a look at some of the names and their meanings. To begin our study, here is a poem I wrote that highlights of few of the beautiful names for God.
The Names of the Lord
My Lord, my God, My Jehovah Elohim
Master creator of all the world agleam
Sun, moon, and stars in the sky abiding
Land and sea and all the creatures residing
You created our ancestors, Adam and Eve.
You created all beings, including me.
My Lord, my God, My Jehovah El Roi
The Master who can see you and me
He watches over me each day and night.
He wants to help all with hearts contrite.
My burdens and worries He willingly bares
He knows me genuinely and lovingly cares.
My Lord, my God, My Jehovah Nissi
The Master who stands guard over me
He is my protector and fights on my behalf.
He leads me by still waters using His staff.
I lay down in peaceful meadows of lush green.
He directs my paths to avoid trouble foreseen.
My Lord, my God, My Jehovah Rapha
The Master who heals my ills and flaws
He provides for my body, mind, and soul.
His healing powers can make me whole.
Even when my body begins to fail
My Savior’s love will always prevail.
My Lord, my God, My Jehovah Shalom
The Master who brings peace to my home
Chaos may reign in the world all around.
Christ’s perfect peace will my heart surround.
I sleep each night soundly, safe in my bed.
Sweet dreams of His peace filling my head.
My Lord, my God, My Jehovah Father
To the Master, my whole heart I do offer
The Lord is my shepherd, I lack for no-thing.
I serve my Savior, the one true Almighty King.
These names of God teach us about His nature.
A life lived for Him will be one full of adventure.
Psalm 30:4 Sing the praises of the LORD, you his faithful people; praise his holy name.

I was overjoyed to find out that my name, a derivative of Elizabeth, means “consecrated to God.” I think names matter greatly! One of my favorite names of God is “Emmanuel,” which means “God with us.” I find great comfort in that definition, especially when I am going through hard times. God is with us, even in times of suffering. After all, He suffered too, so He gets it.
How beautiful and appropriate for the meaning of your name. My means archer. There is so much comfort in the names of God and He tells us because He does get it.

Looking forward to this name of God series, Yvonne. Beautiful poem. I’ve always celebrated Jehovah El Roi the God who sees me. It reminds me of the story of Hager in Genesis 16. She fled to the wilderness during a difficult time. After an angel of the Lord spoke to her,
“So she called the name of the Lord who spoke to her, ‘You are a God of seeing.” (verse 13a)
I love that one too. All the names resonate at different times. It is amazing that our God sees us. God bless
