Have you joined in the latest craze to uncover the secrets of your family history? We all wonder if someone famous shares the same DNA as ours. Does my ancestry show how I might be related to a queen or king? Could I be of the same bloodline as a literary giant from long ago? I think we all search for significance in the mundane of our daily lives by looking to our past. Admittedly I have thought to myself; there must be more to my life than working, raising children, and chores.
Human Ancestry
These thoughts began again recently as I watch my parents’ generation start to depart this life. I helplessly watch as age takes a toll on their frail frames. Those once larger-than-life family members now confined to nursing homes or hospital beds. They guided my life with their wisdom, but now the mantle is passing to my generation. Who will oversee my steps into the future? Will I impact the lives of the next generation?
“In their hearts humans plan their course, but the Lord establishes their steps.”
Proverbs 16:9 (NIV)
Faith Ancestry
I ponder these profound questions as I reflect on those who went before me. Soon, I hear the small whisper of Christ that reminds me that I am never alone in this world. My thoughts turn to my Christian ancestry. I remember all the spiritual giants of the Bible and how they guide my life through their words recorded in scripture. My heart lightens as I understand that Christ will never leave me or forsake me. He will guide my steps all of my life.
I lift up my eyes to the mountains— where does my help come from? My help comes from the Lord, the Maker of heaven and earth.
Psalm 121:1-2 (NIV)
Child of God
I do not have to worry about my ancestry or worry about the significance of my life. I am a child of Christ. Christ paved the way and set the example for me to follow. Christ calls me to walk the path He has laid out for me. Nothing more, nothing less; He wants my obedience. When we follow God’s way, then He will make everything work out. The path may not be easy, and lives will not be perfect. But we are assured in Romans 8:28 that Christ will work out everything for our good.
And we know that in all things God works for the good of those who love him, who have been called according to his purpose.
Romans 8:28 (NIV)
It is nice to know all about our human ancestry and how we fit into our family lineage. But, it is our Christian ancestry that provides us with a purpose and a future. You are a child of a King, and you are significant in His eyes.

Prayer
Dear Heavenly Father, thank you for accepting me into the family of God. Thank you for providing me a future and a purpose better than my human ancestry. Help me always remember that I am a child of the one true King. In Jesus’ Name. Amen.
Blessings,

Ha, so timely. Your blog posted the very same day I got my ancestry.com DNA results back! But you are completely right: our heavenly family and God-DNA is far superior.
But I do hope you found some wonderful information about your family too. It is fun to research our family history. Stay safe and God bless
Keeping our eyes looking vertically towards our heavenly Father helps remind us that we are his beloved children and are part of his eternal narrative.
So very true Anne. Thanks for commenting. Stay safe and God bless.
I love this perspective on our ancestry. You write it well when you say, “it is our Christian ancestry that provides us with a purpose and a future.” We walk in victory over sin an death because of the Son of God. We are his family – a family that comes from righteousness, perfection, and holiness. What more ancestry could we ever want? 🙂
Best family ever 😃. Thanks Marcie. Stay safe and God bless.
Beautiful reminder, Yvonne. So thankful the heavenly Father’s DNA runs through our veins since we are in the bloodline of Christ!
Me too! Thanks so much for visiting. Stay safe and God bless.
Praise God that He calls us child! It’s certainly fun to look into family trees, I will admit. But I do love your point that at the end of the day, all that truly matters is our place in God’s family. Thanks for that reminder!
You are very welcome. Thanks Emily. Stay safe and God bless
These are comforting thoughts as I watch my father slowly fading away. We are never diminished in God’s eyes. We are never forgotten by him. We are never abandoned by God as our bodies decay and our memories fail. He is with us always and into eternity. These thoughts also give me great comfort, Yvonne.
He is with us forever. Such comfort in those words. I hope you are feeling better soon. Thanks Melinda. Stay safe and God bless
