A Tribute to Mom: Symbols of Love and Support

We encounter the first mom within the early pages of the Bible. Eve, bearing the name Ḥawwāh, embodied the essence of life’s eternal spring. The meaning of her name, “source of life,” symbolizes the beginning of a new life, just like the experience of motherhood. Let us reflect on the nurturing qualities from the mothers in the Bible.

Biblical Mom

How does the Bible define the roles of mothers? The Bible shows us through examples of godly mothers, so let us look at what we can learn from the mothers in the Bible. None of these women were perfect in their pursuits but they trusted God even in the difficult moments:

Mom

In Sarah, we discover patience.

Maybe Sarah found solace under the shade of the ancient olive tree, as she patiently awaited the fulfillment of God’s promises. But during the wait, Sarah showed us moments of failure as she tried to take the future into her hands instead of waiting longer. But God rewarded her patience as he provided her with the long-awaited son. Through that Son, God gave birth to the nation of Israel.

In Hagar, we learn endurance.

Hagar ran away from the mistreatment at the hands of her mistress Sarah. Hagar’s weary feet stumbled along the barren desert sands, her desperate cries blending with the scorching wind, until a gentle whisper from God’s voice echoed in her ears, guiding her back to her destined path. That obedience allowed her to be a mother of a nation through Ishmael.

In Naomi, we see faithfulness.

Naomi’s heart became a stormy sea, raging with bitterness and anger as she grappled with the painful loss of her sons. Naomi’s gentle voice, filled with wisdom, resonated with Ruth’s eager ears as she imparted the depths of her faith, painting a vivid picture of God’s unwavering love. And God provided Naomi a grandson named Obed through Ruth. Obed became the father of Jesse, who became the father of King David.

Elizabeth, we discover belief.

In the twilight of her life, Elizabeth discovered the miracle of pregnancy, just as her husband, Zechariah, had assured her. The sweet scent of hope lingered in the air, and Elizabeth’s heart brimmed with a profound sense of gratitude and wonder. Their belief and faith in God’s goodness paid off. Her son, John, led the way to Jesus for many.

In Mary, we learn about sacrifice.

Mary’s heart shattered as she witnessed the piercing sound of each hammer strike mingling with the agonized cries of her beloved son, Jesus, echoing through the air. She wept bitter tears. And in the tapestry of eternity, Mary’s reunion with her resurrected son stands as an unbroken thread, weaving a tale of eternal love and redemption.

The Hard Jobs of Mom

Many of us consider it a blessing to be called mothers. But some women feel overburdened by this role. The never-ending demands of motherhood consume every moment, from the crack of dawn to the late hours of the night, leaving no respite for weary souls.

But the benefits outweigh the problems. The soft, warm embrace of a child’s hug, accompanied by their infectious giggles, had the power to melt away the weight of exhaustion, leaving only pure joy in its wake. Just like the rest of humanity, mothers, too, are prone to sin and shortcomings (Romans 3:23). But with each new day, God grants us the opportunity to start afresh, surrounded by the sights, sounds, and smells that awaken our senses and revive our spirits.

Bible Verses about Mom:

  • Isaiah 66:13: “As one whom his mother comforts, so I will comfort you.”
  • Isaiah 49:15: “Can a mother forget her nursing child? Can she feel no love for the child she has borne?”
  • Proverbs 31:25: “She is clothed with strength and dignity; she can laugh at the days to come.”
  • Proverbs 31:26: “She opens her mouth with wisdom, and the teaching of kindness is on her tongue.”
  • Proverbs 31:28–29“Her children rise up and call her blessed; her husband also, and he praises her: ‘Many women have done excellently, but you surpass them all.’”
  • Titus 2:4“Then they can urge the younger women to love their husbands and children.”
  • Psalm 127:3: “Children are a heritage from the Lord, offspring a reward from him.”

Remember Mothers

On this special day, let us come together to celebrate and pay tribute to the incredible moms who bless our lives. And as we honor these remarkable women, let us also pause and remember those whose hearts ache for the touch of a child’s tiny hands.

A Prayer.

Heavenly Father, as we gather here, the soft fragrance of flowers fills the air, creating a peaceful atmosphere. We thank You for the precious gift of motherhood, a celebration of love and sacrifice. Today, we honor and appreciate the mothers who tenderly guide and nurture us, both biologically and spiritually. Their gentle voices echo in our hearts, filled with wisdom and compassion. May they be blessed with abounding joy, unwavering strength, and an endless supply of love as they continue their selfless devotion to us. Amen.

Yvonne, thank you for this walk through the Bible to remember godly mothers. Not perfect mothers, but women who desired to follow the Lord. Each one was blessed by God. May we be faithful mothers, loving our families and pointing them to Jesus. Happy Mother’s Day, dear friend!
