The Study of the Book of Matthew Ματθαίος

Let’s embark on an awe-inspiring journey through the New Testament, delving into the profound depths of the book of Matthew. As we move through each book, we hope to uncover the profound and life-altering messages that lie within.

“For everything that was written in the past was written to teach us, so that through the endurance taught in the Scriptures and the encouragement they provide we might have hope.” Romans 15:4 (NIV).

Here are several questions to ponder to help us dig deeper into God’s Word:

  1. What do you think is the key message of this chapter?
  2. What did you learn from this chapter?
  3. Which point in this chapter spoke to you the most? How did it affect you?
  4. Why do you think God included this chapter in the Bible?
  5. What was the context? What was going on in that time period?
Matthew

Details from the Book of Matthew

  • Author: Believed to be Matthew, the Apostle.
  • Date Written: Approximately A.D. 60-65.
  • Length: 28 Chapters.
  • Keywords: Kingdom of Heaven.
  • Key Verses: “Where is the newborn king of the Jews? We saw his star as it rose, and we have come to worship him.” (Matthew 2:2 NLT)
  • Purpose: To prove that Jesus is the Messiah.

Summary:

For four hundred years, God’s people faced silence from the prophets. They felt abandoned and questioned if God had left them. Without a genuine prophet, they had to navigate their faith alone, testing their spiritual strength. However, God’s silence was just a prelude to his plan for redemption. Matthew clarified God hadn’t forgotten his people. And he hasn’t forgotten us either.

Important Messages from Matthew:

Matthew’s primary goal is to convince the Jewish people Jesus is the long-awaited Messiah. He emphasizes Jesus’ role as the son of God, using the virgin birth and God’s affirmation at his baptism. Matthew also highlights Jesus’ kingship, tracing his lineage back to David and declaring the Kingdom of God is near. Last, Matthew emphasizes how Jesus fulfills the Old Testament prophecies, more so than the other gospels.

How To Apply the Lessons Today:

Matthew begins by stating that Jesus is the Messiah. He ends by telling us to make disciples for Him. These statements guide us to live a life of faith. God wants us to believe in Jesus as the Messiah and share the Gospel with others so they can become followers of Jesus, too.

Unique Messages in Matthew:

The four Gospels outline Jesus’ life and times. They also offer unique messages to deepen belief in Christ. Matthew’s Gospel contains some of these unique stories from Jesus’ time on earth.

  • Joseph’s dream (1. 20-24).
  • The visit of the wise men from the East (2. 1-12)
  • The flight to Egypt (2. 13-15)
  • Herod kills the children (2. 16-18)
  • Judas repents (27)
  • Pilate’s wife’s dream (27.19)
  • Other resurrections (27.52)

Love this summary of Matthew. The lineage of Jesus that Matthew adds has always fascinated me. And I like how you connected the opening and closing of the book–Jesus is the Messiah and we are to spread the gospel and make disciples.
