The Study of the Gospel of Mark Σημάδι

Let’s embark on an awe-inspiring journey through the New Testament, delving into the profound depths of each book. Today, we will look at the book of Mark. And as we move through each one, we hope to uncover the profound and life-altering messages that lie within.

“For everything that was written in the past was written to teach us, so that through the endurance taught in the Scriptures and the encouragement they provide we might have hope.” Romans 15:4 (NIV).

Here are several questions to ponder to help us dig deeper into God’s Word:

  • What do you think is the key message of this chapter?
  • What did you learn from this chapter?
  • Which point in this chapter spoke to you the most? How did it affect you?
  • Why do you think God included this chapter in the Bible?
  • What was the context? What was going on in that time period?

Details from the Book of Mark

  • Author: John Mark. He was not one of the 12 disciples, but he accompanied Paul on his first missionary journey.
  • Date Written: Between A.D. 55 and 65.
  • Length: 16 Chapters.
  • Keywords: Good news.
  • Key Verses: For even the Son of Man came not to be served but to serve others and to give his life as a ransom for many. (Mark 10:45 NLT).
  • Purpose: To present the person, work, and teaching of Jesus.

Summary of Mark:

Many believe that the Gospel of Mark was the first Gospel written. Mark approaches his narrative like a news reporter talking about an event. It is a simple, succinct, unadorned, yet vivid account of Jesus’ ministry. The emphasis is more on what Jesus did rather than what he said. Mark moves quickly from one event to the next without pause. The focus is on the good news of Jesus’ life as the Messiah. This book is the shortest of the four Gospels in the Bible.

Important Messages from the Book:

Mark shows Jesus in a very natural and human light. His gospel tells of Jesus being angry (3:5) and sympathetic (5:36, 6:34.) Mark also tells us that Jesus admits to things He doesn’t know, such as the appointed time for the end of the world (13:32.) [St. Joseph Edition of the New American Bible, 1970]. The Gospel of Mark’s primary message is that Jesus is the Son of God. It teaches that Jesus came to earth as the sinless Son of God and died for our sins. The actions of Christ dominate the text.

How To Apply the Lessons Today:

Mark became known as “the evangelist” because he focused on reaching Gentile readers. He portrays Jesus as a suffering servant and emphasizes that all His disciples are called to be suffering servants, too. They are to take up their crosses and follow Him. This message is still relevant today. Mark shows us that sharing the gospel is important and a requirement for followers of Christ. How does the message of evangelism in this book challenge you to share the Gospel with others in your life?

Unique Messages of Mark:

  • The Gospel According to Mark does not include the story of Jesus’s birth. Instead, it starts by describing Jesus’s adult life.
  • Mark has a unique parable, not found in other gospels, called The Seed Growing in Secret.
  • Historians believe that the other gospels used Mark’s words as a foundation for their stories, but added more details.
  • Mark seems to be aimed at readers who are not very familiar with Judaism, as it focuses intensely on communicating the gospel to them.

Dear Lord and Savior, please help us understand the messages you provide in the New Testament. Help us absorb them and put them into practice in our lives. Teach us to live them out daily. As Apostle Matthew explained, encourage our hearts to believe in the message and share it with others we meet today and every day. In Jesus’ name, amen.

Thank you for sharing this informative message about the Gospel of Mark. I’ve always appreciated his “get to the point” message and evidently the other Gospel authors were convinced of the integrity of Mark’s message since Matthew and Luke used Mark’s writings frequently as a resource. Thank you for reminding us the the powerful words each of the Gospels share from Jesus remain just as applicable today as they were then.

    1. Yvonne Morgan

Thank you Katherine. Mark would make a great news reporter with his get to the point methods. But he gives us so many awesome points. God bless.

Studying books of the Bible are how we learn more about what God is saying to us. It is important to read it, but we need to do more than just skim the pages. Thanks for this in-depth look at Mark.

The word that stands out to me from the book of Mark is “immediately.” Mark’s book moves along at a quick pace, so Jesus does things “immediately.” My hope is that I will respond to God’s direction “immediately” as well.

Yes, it is an important message buried within the book. Thanks Joanna and God bless
