What Holy Week Teaches Us About Life and Faith

I love hearing stories of selfless sacrifices, like a neighbor helping an elderly person or rescuing a trapped animal—simply because it’s the right thing to do. These heartwarming tales fill me with a comforting sense of well-being, reinforcing my faith in humanity’s inherent kindness. The narratives not only make me aspire to be a better person but also ignite a desire within me to change my life for the better. In today’s devotional, we will explore three impactful lessons from Holy Week, lessons designed to ignite our faith and guide us toward a deeper, more meaningful Christian life.

Holy Week

Holy Week Story

The Easter story unfolds in the Gospels of Matthew, Mark, Luke, and John, each account offering unique details and perspectives on the events surrounding Jesus’ crucifixion and resurrection. To prepare for Easter, let’s delve into the Holy Week Gospels, drawing inspiration to improve ourselves spiritually and become stronger in our faith.

“14. And since I, your Lord and Teacher, have washed your feet, you ought to wash each other’s feet. 15. I have given you an example to follow. Do as I have done to you.” John 13:14-15 (NLT).

Lesson from Maundy Thursday

The narrative of Holy Week begins on Maundy Thursday. According to Biblical history, on this day, our Lord shared a last meal, the Last Supper, with his disciples. Following the meal, Jesus, with quiet humility, washed the dusty feet of his twelve disciples. Though the weight of Judas’s impending betrayal was heavy on his heart, Jesus still included him among his disciples. This part of the story shows us that even when others hurt or betray us, we are still called to serve them; it is a lesson in selfless love and compassion, even in the face of adversity.

“14. And since I, your Lord and Teacher, have washed your feet, you ought to wash each other’s feet. 15. I have given you an example to follow. Do as I have done to you.” John 13:14-15 (NLT).

Lesson from Good Friday

The scriptures then recount the somber events of Good Friday, detailing the crucifixion of Jesus. A secret trial took place before they sent Jesus to Pilate, who then found him guilty. The jeering crowd’s cries for Jesus’ crucifixion overwhelmed Pilate, leading him to condemn the innocent man to a torturous death on the cross. Jesus, innocent of any crime, endures a brutal, agonizing crucifixion, willingly sacrificing himself for the sake of all humankind; the sounds of his suffering echoing through the ages. Jesus sacrificed himself for us, completely selfless in his act of love. This part of Holy Week emphasizes the importance of extending Christ-like, unconditional love to all, without reservation or exception.

“16 We know what real love is because Jesus gave up his life for us. So we also ought to give up our lives for our brothers and sisters. 17 If someone has enough money to live well and sees a brother or sister in need but shows no compassion—how can God’s love be in that person?” 1 John 3:16-17 (NLT).

Lesson from the Resurrection during Holy Week

As Saturday bled into Sunday, somewhere between night and morning, the last scene in the Holy Week story unfolded. Mary and several other women, carrying fragrant spices and ointments, started their journey to the tomb early in the morning to prepare Jesus’ body according to Jewish tradition.

They found the massive stone rolled away from the entrance, revealing the dark, empty tomb within. With a voice like the gentle chime of bells, an angel appeared to the women, proclaiming that Jesus had risen from the dead and overcame death. The empty tomb, a silent testament to Christ’s resurrection, prepared us for life after death. This day marks the foundation of our Christian faith, a day filled with profound spiritual significance and celebrated with reverence.

“Whoever believes in the Son has eternal life, but whoever rejects the Son will not see life, for God’s wrath remains on them.” John 3:36 (NIV).

Applying the Lessons from Holy Week

The Easter story’s Biblical lessons, filled with hope and sacrifice, not only warm our hearts but also inspire us to become better disciples of Christ. God intends His story to be transformative, leading to deeper understanding, and a changed life, not just pleasant feelings.

God calls us to take these words to heart, letting them reshape our lives and actions. To show that he was the way, the truth, and the life, he made the ultimate sacrifice, surrendering every aspect of his existence for our understanding. The weight of his actions was palpable and, through his actions, he gave us the gift of eternal life. We only need to have faith in him, to trust in his plan and his power.

“For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life.” John 3:16 (NIV).

Prayer for Easter

prayer for Holy Week

“Lord, Jesus Christ, you became human and took on the realities of humanity in our world. During Your life on earth, you gave hope, perspective and salvation to many. Your words are challenging, uplifting, encouraging, and guiding. At the end of your earthly life here in our world, you took upon yourself all suffering and made the cross a sign of hope. At this time when the whole world is suffering, when people are isolated and left to themselves, when people mourn for their loved ones, where people are sacrificing their physical and psychological strength to help others, we pray in solidarity and entrust ourselves to you. Amen.” Adapted from prayers by Sister Ulrike M., SDS—Austria.
