Makeover

How to Start Your Godly Makeover Today

Here in Oklahoma, summer means scorching temperatures that bake the earth and cause a shimmering haze to rise from the parched land. My wardrobe during summer gets a makeover of dark, heavy fabrics to light and breezy options. With temperatures soaring, the refreshing pool becomes a much-needed escape. With the long summer days and warm breezes, I decided I needed a small makeover. My new look involved a dramatic chop, trading my long locks for a short, simple style. The change felt refreshing, like a cool breeze on a summer day, and gave me a new outlook for the summer months.

Makeover

Godly Makeover

As I made these changes, I pondered how God wants to reshape us, refining our character to better reflect his image. A “Godly makeover” is a spiritual transformation, a reshaping of thoughts, actions, and character to become more Christlike. This makeover isn’t just about surface-level changes; it’s about a profound shift in our hearts and minds that involves a yielding to God’s will, trusting in His process of molding us into the unique individual He designed us to be.

A well-known Biblical verse provides compelling evidence for this idea. 2 Corinthians 5:17 (NIV) proclaims the radical change of becoming a “new creation” in Christ, a complete spiritual renewal that impacts every aspect of life. This marks a complete transformation, a shedding of old habits and beliefs to embrace a life guided by God’s principles, a change felt deeply in the soul. God gives us a spiritual makeover, renewing our hearts and minds when we accept him.

Makeover Changes

A key aspect of a Godly makeover is surrendering control of your life to God, trusting in His plan and seeking His guidance in every decision. This means surrendering your personal ambitions, timelines, and anxieties, trusting in God’s superior design for your life; a feeling of peace washes over you as you relinquish control. With these changes, an inner glow shines through, brightening our transformed lives and radiating Christ. But for a believer, what does that inner beauty, that radiant glow of faith, look like?

  • Christ infuses our spirits with a gentle grace, a sense of inner tranquility that brings peace and contentment. The Bible’s emphasis on the “unfading beauty of a quiet spirit” (1 Peter 3:4 NIV) speaks to a radiant inner peace that transcends physical attractiveness. This inner beauty, a radiant glow cultivated through prayer and devotion, far surpasses any outward adornment. This means we value qualities like meekness and humility with an emphasis on inner spiritual beauty rather than outward displays of wealth or power.
  • A godly makeover transforms our perspective, leading to positive changes in behavior and choices. It shapes our thought processes, colors our speech, and guides our behavior in measurable ways. It fosters stronger bonds with loved ones, boosts work performance, and enhances our overall well-being, leading to a more fulfilling lifestyle. Our new demeanor, marked by kindness and compassion, draws people in as we reflect Christ’s love for the world.
  • With the change comes a renewed sense of purpose. He lifts our burdens, revealing a renewed purpose within God’s divine plan, leading us to live lives that glorify Him.
  • As beacons of light, we inspire and guide others. Our transformed lives, marked by peace and joy, powerfully inspire others to seek God.

A godly makeover is not a superficial change, but a profound spiritual journey of growth and discovery, leading to a life of purpose, joy, and fulfillment, marked by the quiet strength and confidence that comes from aligning ourselves with Christ. A complete life overhaul is God’s plan for us, but He’s holding back until we reach out.

The Before and After of the Change

The difference between before and after our makeover is strikingly clear for all to observe. In our transgressions before Christ, we were as good as dead, cut off from God’s grace and life. But after we receive Christ into our lives, a transformation begins, conforming us to the image of Christ (Romans 8:29 NIV). God’s plan is to refresh and reshape our lives, and it all begins by welcoming Christ as our Lord and Savior. Then he can work on our hearts and minds, changing us from within.

Prayer

Father, I ask you to cleanse my thoughts, renew my mind, and align my thinking with your truth. Help me see through the enemy’s deceptive whispers and to adopt your truthful viewpoint. Lord, cleanse my heart of its impurities and mold me into your image. Guide my steps, nurturing my growth into the person you envision, and help me transform my life into something beautiful and meaningful. Thank you, Lord Jesus. Amen.

Excellent analogy!! Makeovers are always refreshing (and even a little scary, ha!) and require us to step outside our comfort zone; spiritual makeovers are the same!

    Great analogy, Yvonne.
