Let’s embark on an awe-inspiring journey through the New Testament, delving into the profound depths of the book of Colossians. As we move through each book, we hope to uncover the profound and life-altering messages that lie within.
“For everything that was written in the past was written to teach us, so that through the endurance taught in the Scriptures and the encouragement they provide we might have hope.” Romans 15:4 (NIV).
Here are several questions to ponder to help us dig deeper into God’s Word:
- What do you think is the key message of this chapter?
- What did you learn from this chapter?
- Which point in this chapter spoke to you the most? How did it affect you?
- Why do you think God included this chapter in the Bible?
- What was the context? What was going on during that time period?

Details from the Book of Colossians “Κολοσσαείς”
- Author: Paul.
- Date Written: Approximately A.D. 60, during Paul’s imprisonment in Rome.
- Length: 4 chapters.
- Keywords: Christ, faith and wisdom.
- Key Verses: “15. The Son is the image of the invisible God, the firstborn over all creation. 16. For in him all things were created: things in heaven and on earth, visible and invisible, whether thrones or powers or rulers or authorities; all things have been created through him and for him.” (1:15-16 NIV).
- Purpose: To show that believers have everything they need in Christ.
Summary of Colossians:
Colossians highlights Christ’s supreme power and all-encompassing grace, encouraging believers to discover total fulfillment in Him and live a renewed life guided by His teachings. The letter tackles the false teachings swirling in Colossae, perhaps stemming from rigid legalism, abstract philosophy, and shadowy mysticism, by emphasizing Christ’s unmatched glory as the very image of the unseen God, the architect of the universe, and the one who brings harmony to all creation. It also focuses on showing faith through ethical actions, fostering unity and brotherly love, and encouraging a resilient spirit when faced with adversity.
Important Messages from the Book:
We can distill the essence of Colossians into these key takeaways.
- Christ, the very image of God, is the radiant expression of His glory.
- All Things Created Through and For Christ: Creation bursts forth through Christ’s power and finds its ultimate purpose in His glory.
- Reconciliation Through Christ: Christ’s death on the cross reconciled believers to God and to each other, building unity in place of discord.
- Spiritual Warfare: The letter acknowledges the grim reality of unseen spiritual forces and encourages believers to stand firm against them.
- A life as a New Creation: Believers are called to shed their old sinful ways and embrace a new life, marked by acts of love, a strong sense of unity, and a Christ-like character.
How to Apply the Lessons Today:
Colossians is a powerful message, providing hope and transformation. It invites believers to locate their identity and purpose in Jesus Christ and to live out their faith in a world that frequently seeks to divert them from Him. For a practical application of Colossians, we should fix our thoughts on God, discarding our sinful habits, and adorning ourselves with Christ-like virtues of compassion, kindness, and forgiveness.
Unique Messages of Colossians:
Colossians’ theology has a unique flavor because of Paul’s confrontation with a misleading ideology that posed a danger to the church in Colossae. We can be thankful that Paul had to confront this misleading doctrine in Colossae; this gave him the chance to articulate with precision the magnificence and completeness of the glorified Christ for the believer. This Christ dwells in our very souls below, and he hides us with him in the heavens above. In our daily struggles, this should offer the believer a hopeful vision of the future.
Prayer:

Dear Lord and Savior, please help us understand the messages you provide in the New Testament. Help us absorb them and put them into practice in our lives. Teach us to live them out daily. As Apostle Paul explained, encourage our hearts to believe in the message and share it with others we meet today and every day. In Jesus’ name, amen.

Colossians may be short, but it is a powerful book of the Bible. One of my favorite things has always been: Christ is the image of the invisible God. Thank you for these Scripture overviews!

Colossians spoke to me when I was a young believer. After engaging with some members from a cult I asked God to show me the truth. When I opened my Bible I read, “For in Him all the fullness of Deity dwells in bodily form.” Hallelujah, what a Savior!
Wow, how amazing. Praise the Lord for guiding you. Blessings to you Debbie.
How glorious is our Lord Jesus. What a wonderful hope we have in Him. Thank you, Yvonne.
