AI and Faith

AI and Faith: A Useful Tool?

Will AI take over the world?

Headlines blast us with questions like, “How fast can AI change the workforce?” (The New York Times). Others look at how technology might reshape spiritual life, with headlines such as “How AI Is Fusing with Faith.”

As a Christian writer, these discussions made me wonder: How might artificial intelligence affect the way we share faith and biblical truth?

AI and Faith

Faith and AI

The real question isn’t whether AI will exist. It’s how it will influence faith. Could it distract people from God? Or could it become a tool to spread the Gospel and biblical teaching further?

Tools can build or distort the truth of faith. Throughout history, we can see people worrying about this issue. When someone invented the printing press, people worried a person could use it to spread false teaching, and it did sometimes. But it also allowed the Bible to reach ordinary people for the first time. The same fears arose with the invention of the radio, television, and the internet. Every new communication tool carries both risks and opportunities, and AI is just the newest tool in this debate.

How AI might distort faith

First, it is important to understand that AI doesn’t have desires, ambition, or a will to control things. It doesn’t wake up and decide to dominate humanity. It only does what humans program or prompt it to do. Without people directing it, AI simply sits there. Think of AI like electricity or the internet. Those technologies reshaped society, but they didn’t take over. People can use it to distort the truth of the Gospel in the following ways:

1. False teaching that sounds convincing. AI can generate spiritual or theological content that sounds wise but may not be biblically accurate.

2. Deepfakes and misinformation. People might create fake videos or messages that appear to come from pastors, leaders, or ministries and cause problems.

3. Replacing real spiritual guidance. Some people might look to AI instead of Scripture, prayer, church, or wise mentors.

Technology changes, but human nature and God’s sovereignty don’t. Tools come and go, but the deeper questions of purpose, obedience, and faith remain the same. The danger isn’t the technology itself. The danger comes when people treat it as an authority rather than using it as a tool and testing what it says against reliable sources and Scripture.

Psalm 20:7: “Some trust in chariots and some in horses, but we trust in the name of the Lord our God.”

How AI strengthens faith

Technology is a tool God allows humanity to develop, and the responsibility lies in how wisely we use it. AI existed before these new apps like ChatGPT began. The program Word used an early type of AI to help us correct our spelling and grammar mistakes. I found those benefits helpful in my writing career. I don’t use it to write my entire articles because I only use it to help me with my grammar.

Genesis speaks about humans being stewards of creation, not owners of it, and that idea fits well with modern conversations about technology and environmental responsibility.

Here are some examples of how AI can help believers:

  1. Help translate the Bible into more languages faster.
  2. Create teaching resources.
  3. Help missionaries communicate across cultures.
  4. Assist ministries with planning and outreach.
  5. Make Scripture and Christian teaching more accessible.

AI can become something like a digital assistant for ministry, helping them reach more people with encouragement and truth, as long as we don’t rely on it to write the entire blog, sermon, or message.

The safeguard

We don’t find the safeguard in the technology itself. It’s found in discernment. A constant calling for Christians is to discern the truth of what they hear. In Acts 17:11, the Bereans received praise because they examined the Scriptures daily to see if what they heard was true. That same principle applies today. We must:

  • check Scripture.
  • seek wise counsel.
  • test teaching.

Technology changes, but the responsibility to seek truth remains the same. As we look throughout history, we see how faith survived:

  • empires.
  • persecution.
  • cultural revolutions.
  • and every communication technology invented so far.

And many times, believers ended up using these tools to spread the Gospel even further.

Other Factors

Beyond the faith discussion, AI also raises practical concerns that society must consider.

  • Job disruption.
  • Misinformation.
  • Privacy.
  • Misuse by bad actors.
  • Electricity usage.
  • Water usage.
  • Raw materials usage.

Some of the potential benefits for the future include:

  • accelerating medical research.
  • improving agriculture.
  • optimizing energy grids.
  • predicting disasters.
  • helping translate and spread knowledge worldwide.

Society must balance the benefits of AI with its energy, environmental, and ethical costs. AI is a tool, and like any other tool, it can have good uses and bad ones. Many people see AI as something that can free humans to focus more on purpose, relationships, creativity, and faith rather than endless routine work. I’d love to hear your opinion on the subject.

Prayer

Heavenly Father,

In a world filled with information and new technology, help us keep our hearts grounded in Your truth and give us discernment to recognize what is good and what leads us away from You.

Teach us to use every tool, including technology, to spread hope, encouragement, and the light of Christ. Guard our minds from deception and guide our words so they reflect Your love and wisdom. May everything we create and share point others back to You.

In Jesus’ name,

Amen.

A very helpful message, Yvonne. As with most issues, it’s important to look at the positive and negative impacts. You’ve also shown us how AI can be used in ways to help spread the Gospel and benefit humankind. Thank you!

Thanks for laying out that there are not just cons to AI, but good things as well. I need to be reminded instead of grudging the surge of AI. I agree there are some people who rely too much on AI for advice instead of godly counsel, so I pray for those people.

Me too Joanna. We need to check everything we do against the Bible. Blessings

Yvonne, a wise and excellent post. We do trust in the name of the Lord and put safeguards in place. And we use discernment. This sums it up so well, “Tools come and go, but the deeper questions of purpose, obedience, and faith remain the same. The danger isn’t the technology itself. The danger comes when people treat it as an authority rather than using it as a tool and testing what it says against reliable sources and Scripture.”

Thank you Karen. I think too many people want to make Faith extra easy. It takes effort like checking it out and testing it against scripture. Blessings
