A New Study of the Book of 1 John

Let’s begin an inspiring journey through the New Testament as we explore the powerful truths found in the book of 1 John. This brief letter may only contain five chapters, but its message reaches deeply into our hearts and challenges us to walk closely with God each day. Through John’s words, we discover reassurance, truth, love, and the confidence we can have in Christ.

“For everything that was written in the past was written to teach us, so that through the endurance taught in the Scriptures and the encouragement they provide we might have hope.” Romans 15:4 (NIV).

As you study this book, take time to reflect on these questions:

  1. What do you think is the key message of this chapter?
  2. What did you learn from this chapter?
  3. Which point in this chapter spoke to you the most? How did it affect you?
  4. Why do you think God included this chapter in the Bible?
  5. What was the historical context? What was happening during this time?

Summary of 1 John (1 Γιάννης)

The First Epistle of John is a pastoral letter to encourage and strengthen early Christians. False teachers had spread dangerous ideas that denied Jesus truly came in human flesh. These teachings created confusion within the church and caused some believers to question the truth they had received.

John lovingly reminds Christians that true fellowship with God comes through faith in Jesus Christ. He reassures believers they can know they belong to God and have eternal life through Him.

Near the end of the letter, John clearly explains his purpose for writing:

“I write these things to you who believe in the name of the Son of God so that you may know that you have eternal life.” 1 John 5:13 (NIV).

Important Messages from the Book

1. Walking in the Light

John teaches that “God is light; in him there is no darkness at all.” Those who follow Christ are called to walk in the light by obeying God, living honestly, and confessing their sins instead of hiding them. God’s grace brings forgiveness and restoration when we come to Him with humble hearts.

2. The Power of Love

One of the most well-known truths from 1 John is that “God is love.” Genuine faith comes through the way we love others. John challenges believers to move beyond empty words and show love through actions, compassion, forgiveness, and sacrifice.

3. Holding Firm to the Truth

John warns believers about false teachers and the spirit of the antichrist, which opposes the truth about Jesus Christ. He urges Christians to remain grounded in sound doctrine and stay faithful to the truth they learned from the beginning.

How to Apply the Lessons of 1 John Today

The teachings in 1 John remain deeply relevant in today’s world. This letter encourages us to confess hidden sin instead of carrying guilt and shame. It reminds us to love others sincerely rather than simply speaking kind words without action. John also challenges believers to stay rooted in biblical truth in a world filled with confusion and deception.

1 John serves as a practical guide for authentic Christian living. It teaches us how to recognize truth, strengthen our faith, and maintain close fellowship with God.

Unique Message of 1 John

John introduces us to the term “antichrist” in 1 John. John warns believers that the spirit of the antichrist was already active in the world through false teachings that denied Christ. His warning reminds Christians to test what they hear and remain faithful to biblical truth.
