Over the last few weeks, I’ve posted lots of stories about seeing God in the ordinary events of life and even in my fun travel adventures. Jesus is central in many of these messages and how I see him in those moments, but sometimes they miss answering the question of why I need Jesus.
I accepted Christ as my Savior during Sunday School in a small church in Windsor, Ontario, Canada, many years ago. I remember running to my parents afterwards to share the good news with them on that bright and sunny day, and I have never regretted it. My decision began a lifelong journey of learning to follow Jesus. Through prayer, Bible reading, church, and the work of the Holy Spirit, my relationship with Him continues to grow. The Gospel isn’t about becoming a better person. It’s about receiving what Jesus has already done for us and learning to live a purposeful life for him.
What is Humanity’s Greatest Need?
I learned our greatest need through my years of mission work as I’ve helped people with their tangible needs, such as food, shelter, orphan care, education, church buildings, etc. I have witnessed children digging through trash piles looking for food. Food could satisfy their hunger for a few hours. The help we provided could make their lives better. But none of those things could meet their deepest needs. Like me, they needed the hope found in Jesus. Their greatest need is my greatest need. We all need a Savior.
Why Does the World Need Jesus?
God created us for a relationship with Him. In the Garden of Eden, Adam and Eve enjoyed fellowship with God, but when sin entered the world, it broke that relationship. We could not repair that broken relationship ourselves. So God sent His Son, Jesus. Jesus didn’t simply show us how to get back to God. Through His death and resurrection, He made the way for us to be reconciled to God. Through Christ’s death and resurrection, God offers us salvation as a gift of grace. We receive that gift through faith. We receive and accept that gift through faith. That gift allows us to spend eternity in heaven with Christ.
For God so loved the world that hJohne gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life. John 3:16 (NIV).
Why Do We Need Rescuing?
When sin entered the world, it changed everything. Sin allowed bad things to happen. When sin entered the world, everything changed. Brokenness and death became part of the human experience. We see the effects of that brokenness everywhere, but sin isn’t only something happening around us. It is also within us. We see the effects of a broken world everywhere, but sin isn’t only something happening around us. It is also within us. I need Jesus not simply because of a broken world, but because I am a sinner who cannot save myself. Jesus rescues us from sin and its ultimate consequence of separation from God.
For the wages of sin is death, but the gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord. Romans 6:23 (NIV).
How Do I Accept Jesus?
The Bible gives us a simple answer in the following verse:
If you declare with your mouth, Jesus is Lord, and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved. Romans 10:9 (NIV).
Need Help with Prayer
We don’t find salvation by saying the right words or reciting a particular prayer. It comes through placing our faith in Jesus Christ. If you want to put your trust in Him today, prayer is simply a way of expressing that faith to God.
Jesus, I know I am a sinner and I cannot save myself. I believe you died for my sins and rose again. I put my trust in You as my Savior and Lord. Please forgive me and help me begin a new life with you. Thank You for loving me, saving me, and giving me the hope of eternal life. Amen.
If you put your faith in Jesus today, this isn’t the end of something. It’s the beginning of a new life with Him. Find a Bible-believing church where you can learn, ask questions, worship, and grow alongside other Christians. Begin reading the Bible and talking to God in prayer. You don’t have to understand everything before you begin. I certainly didn’t on that sunny Sunday morning in Windsor. I simply knew I needed Jesus. And after all these years, I still need Jesus.
