Are You Committed?

Psalm 37:5 “Commit everything you do to the LORD. Trust him, and he will help you.”

Simple Definition of commitment

  • :a promise to do or give something
  • :a promise to be loyal to someone or something
  • :the attitude of someone who works very hard to do or support something

Making a commitment to something or someone can be very scary. I remember when I made the commitment to follow Christ’s call to work with orphans. I felt terrified and unsure of my abilities to complete the task. However, I stuck with it and now almost 20 years later I am still hard at work at it and loving it.

Many circumstances have challenged my commitment during the years. I remember one year in particular. The Kenyan government required the orphans to visit any living relatives once a year. We committed to send all the children to their home village at Christmas. It would be the first time we attempted to fulfill this commitment. All the orphans were scheduled to return to the orphanage on the same day, shortly after Christmas. We waited with great anticipations because we were not sure if the children would return. Would the families keep them in the village? Would the children want to return? Finally, the morning arrived and as the staff arrived at the home, they found all the children excitedly waiting at the gate. They had so many stories to share about their visits. We asked the children if they were glad to be back.  As the smiles widened across their beautiful faces, they said, “This is our home, of course we are glad to be back.” We committed, we trusted and God helped us just as the verse in Psalm 37:5 tells us.

What commitments do you need to entrust to the Lord today?
