The Gift of Grace

For it is by grace you have been saved, through faith—and this is not from yourselves, it is the gift of God

Ephesians 2:8 (NIV)

The Gift of Grace

After my mom died, we cleaned out her apartment. I put her essential paperwork in a safe place in case I needed it later on. Then, when I needed to file some paperwork to close out her accounts, I could not find what I needed anywhere. I searched for days. I cried in frustration, and then I prayed. Once I prayed, God nudged me to look behind a desk, and that is where I found it. I felt a wave of relief wash over me. Maybe if I had prayed first, I might have found it sooner. The event reminded me of the story of the Lost Coin in the Bible and how God gives us His grace even when we don’t deserve it. So, let’s look at the gift of grace.

The Gift of Grace

Webster’s Dictionary defines grace as follows: “(in Christian belief) the free and unmerited favor of God, as manifested in the salvation of sinners and the bestowal of blessings.” Thus, grace is a free and unmerited gift from God. Yet, sometimes, I believe we do not fully grasp the beauty and significance of God’s gift of grace in our lives.

As humans, we try to extend grace to those around us. But, we fail miserably because of our broken and sinful nature. Since we are incapable of giving grace perfectly, we cannot understand God’s perfect gift of grace. He died for our sins, freeing us from the sting of death forever. Christ continues to welcome us back to Himself each time we sin and repent.

“But to each one of us grace has been given as Christ apportioned it.”

Ephesians 4:7

Other Lessons from the Gift of Grace

We learn many other things from this gift of unmerited grace. We also discover these additional concepts from Godly grace:

  • Mercy
  • Forgiveness
  • Charity
  • Compassion
  • Favor
  • Generosity
  • Tenderness
  • Goodwill
  • Pardon

God gives these additional gifts of grace to us so we can offer them to those around us. Grace frees us from the burdens of our sins and teaches us how to treat others. It is the gift that keeps on giving as we grow in His grace.

Let us then approach God’s throne of grace with confidence, so that we may receive mercy and find grace to help us in our time of need.”

Hebrews 4:16

The grace of our Lord Jesus allows Him to love us despite our sins, even the ones hidden deep in our hearts. Nothing we do can earn this gift of grace. His gift is perfect and baffling at the same time. But without grace, we might be lost forever.

So often I find Christians who speak of being saved by grace, yet spend the rest of their life trying to “live up to” that grace, instead of living in it daily!

    1. Yvonne Morgan

Agreed. But it is hard to comprehend that is free since we don’t offer free grace to those around us.

  2. Jessica Brodie

I love this line; “God gives these additional gifts of grace to us so we can offer them to those around us.” This is so true. I find the more grateful I am for the grace I’ve received, the most grace I want to extend others.

    1. Yvonne Morgan

It is amazing how that work. Thanks Jessica. I appreciate your thoughts. God bless.

Yes, grace, grace, God’s wonderful grace! Never earned but freely bestowed upon all who will accept the gift of salvation! Thanks, Yvonne.
