Gas tank

Guest Blog

Few of us would ever start a road trip without checking that we had fuel in the tank. We expect to put more in, depending on how far we’re going, and most often, filling up again on the way home. There is a reason for that—our vehicle requires fuel to make the engine run, which in turns gets us to where we want to go and then home again.

In much the same way, we eat—usually more than once a day. We drink liquids—because that’s what our body needs to function well. We sleep—no surprise here—this is how God created us. Sleep rejuvenates and rebuilds our physical being, detoxifies, produces specific hormones that are only made while we rest.

Spiritual Gas Tank

So it should not come as any news that what we see in the physical world—refueling—would also be true for our spiritual world.

We need to fill the gas tank that makes our relationship with God run.

Knowing this, why do we sometimes resist spending quiet time daily with Him? Is it like when you go to the gas pump and the nozzles are different sizes according to the type of fuel? Are we trying to build our relationship using the wrong fuel?

If you asked folks what was important to being a Christ-follower, most would say a personal relationship where we have admitted we are sinners in need of a Savior, that we believe Jesus is that Messiah, and that we strive to obey Him in all we do.

Next, somebody will be bound to bring up going to church. Reading your Bible. Studying. Memorizing scripture verses.

We see the benefit of being around like-minded believers through fellowship at a local house of faith. But why reading? Studying? Memorizing?

Because life happens. And if we don’t have fuel in our tank, we won’t navigate the sometimes dangerous paths ahead.

Ways to Fill our Gas Tank

Reading and studying God’s Word fills our tanks with His promises, His cautions, His stories of victory, and even the tales of folks who didn’t choose well, so we’d know what not to do. Memorizing scripture gives us a reserve tank of fuel for those times when the world and all its problems, distractions, and temptations seek to overpower us. When faced with a calamitous situation, being able to pull up God’s promises will help us overcome the wily tricks of the enemy.

Filling your spiritual gas tank every day by spending time with God in His Word prepares you for the day, as well as for the journeys ahead, making certain you will not only arrive, but that you get where you’re going without running out part way there.

I think it’s particularly important to have at least some Scripture memorized. In times of high stress when I can’t think of the words to form a prayer, the memorized Scripture is still there in my head to recall and become my simple prayer.

    1. Yvonne Morgan

I agree about the importance of memorizing scriptures. It helps me too. God bless Priscilla

I felt like Donna was speaking to me this morning. I know I need to be more intentional about “filling my tank” with quiet time with God, more Bible study, and a stronger prayer life. I also know I spend too many hours on social media tasks and marketing. Thank you for the encouragement to find a better balance. Yvonne, I’m so gad you hosted Donna. May God bless you both in your service to him.

    1. Yvonne Morgan

Thanks Katherine. Donna message spoke to me too. I often forget to spend time sitting at Jesus’ feet and let my busyness take over. Blessings to you.

Great piece! It’s true… we would never think about trying to drive out into the world with an empty gas tank. Yet many of us go out in the world without our spiritual armor. We need to fill up our spiritual “gas tank” intentionally.

    1. Yvonne Morgan

Amen Jessica. We can’t do God’s work with an empty tank. Blessings

What a wonderful post. Thanks for sharing Donna’s message with us, Yvonne. We absolutely need to refuel our spiritual tanks. Love the point about how memorizing Scripture gives us a reserve tank of fuel. This is what we need daily.

Running on fumes doesn’t work for our cars or our spirits. I am always amazed at how God’s word refreshes and restores my soul.

    1. Yvonne Morgan

Amen Debbie. We need to keep our spirits refreshed and replenished. Blessings

  9. Melissa McLaughlin

Wonderful analogy! And much needed reminder for me. All too often I am running on fumes. Lord, help me pause, rest with you, and fill up.

    1. Yvonne Morgan

Thank you Melissa. I can spend too much time running on fumes too. We must keep our tanks full. Blessings
