I never mediate much and experienced no visions that I believed came from God. I doubted God spoke in such a way. Then, several years ago, I attended a women’s conference at my church. The speaker at the event walked us through a biblical mediation exercise. We closed our eyes and mediated on a verse that held a special meaning to us. My favorite verse is Romans 8:28 (NIV); “And we know that in all things God works for the good of those who love him, who have been called according to his purpose.” As I thought about this verse, a vision flashed through my mind.
The Jewel Vision
In the vision, the church narthex transformed into a breathtaking spectacle, with a floor covered in an array of jewels that shimmered with an ethereal glow, painting the space with a mesmerizing tapestry of colors. God called my attention to the variety of sizes and shapes of the tapestry laying before me.
The vision overwhelmed me with a sense of awe and wonder, as I stood in the presence of God’s divine message, feeling a profound responsibility to cherish and care for His precious treasures. Unsure of the deeper meaning of what I saw, I tucked the message away because I knew it held a deeper meaning for me, and I bowed my head in prayer as I pondered God’s purpose.

Discovering the Purpose
Fast forward to many years later. I read a book called “No Longer a Slumdog: Bringing Hope to Children in Crisis” by K. P. Yohannan. This book tells the stories of many poor Indian children and how they suffer in their society. And the book showed how God redeemed them with His love.
As I read the book, one sentence resonated with me, and it brought back the memory of the vision. The sentence said, “Can we see them as Jesus does, so special to Him, their worth like jewels beyond compare.” Until that moment, I had never thought of other people as jewels, but Christ does. Then, I realized Christ called me to see everyone around me as His precious jewels. And with that one sentence, I glimpsed the meaning of the vision. But, how would I apply it to my life?
Vision Confirmation
Once God provides His vision for our life, He will confirm it for us in some why so we know it from him. My confirmation came during a mission to Kenyan when we stopped to visit a church in a rural area. As we approached the church, the crumbling walls and the roof on the verge of collapse painted a stark picture of a community in desperate need of restoration and hope. We wanted to help restore the church to uplift the area, so we visited the custodian to see how we could help.
And as is Kenyan tradition, the man invited us in to share some chai tea as we talked. But, as we entered, the custodian’s wife’s eyes widened with excitement, her gestures animated and her voice filled with awe as she pointed at us. She spoke in an unfamiliar language, but a friend interpreted the words and the excitement. We discovered the lady dreamed about a couple coming to visit her home to help rebuild the church. Her faced beamed as she proclaimed she saw us as jewels of Christ in the vivid dream.
The pieces of the puzzle fell into place as I flashed back to the vision from years before I, in that moment, knew God called me to care for his lost and suffering jewels in the world.
Visions of Purpose
God’s vision leads us to his purpose for our life and he equips us with the spiritual gifts to fulfill that purpose. Walking out that purpose will not always be easy. And as I navigate the twists and turns on the journey ahead, I stand firm because I am armed with the vision planted within me. And I press on with determination, secure knowing that God’s hand is guiding me towards fulfilling His purpose. Has God given you a vision for his purpose for your life? Are you living into that purpose?
“For we are God’s handiwork, created in Christ Jesus to do good works, which God prepared in advance for us to do.”
Ephesians 2:10 (NLT).
Prayer

Heavenly Father. Thank you for seeing us as a precious gem and loving us so much. Please help us see your vision for our life as we seek to fulfill your purpose for us. Help us when the struggles and uncertainty could the vision. Thank you for such a beautiful gift. In Jesus’ Holy Name. Amen.
Grace and Peace to you,
