It’s An Unexpected Journey to Finding God’s Promises

Life often leads us down unexpected paths. These unexpected travels could involve job termination or a crippling illness. No matter the cause, such changes can shake our faith and compel us to seek a deeper understanding.

We packed the car several weeks ago, and the salty breeze of coastal Oregon welcomed us as we traveled northwest to visit my brother. I did not expect to return to Oregon so soon, yet it happened. Then the world shifted after receiving a text message from my sister-in-law.

Unexpected

The First Visit

Planning a visit to see my older brother brought a surge of happiness that filled my heart. Over the years and with the miles between us, we drifted, and my heart ached for a way to reconnect before we lost forever. We headed off to the sea, to where the sand felt warm beneath our feet, as I anticipated our reunion.

The crashing waves’ white noise filled the motel room, while my gaze swept across the expansive sandy beach. As I recalled fond childhood memories with my parents and brother, a gentle sigh escaped my lips, and I felt the tightness in my shoulders melt away. With only us remaining, recollection of bygone days stirred a longing within me.

My aging brother’s frail frame felt fragile in my arms, and the sight of him made me stop and think. As we talked and spent time together, I offered a prayer of thanks for the chance to visit. A few days later, we parted ways, making plans to meet again and stay connected in the coming months. We departed with hearts full of joy for our time spent, anticipating future reunions.

The Unexpected Call

A few weeks later, my sister-in-law’s text message sent an unexpected wave of emotion through me. My brother was gone. As I processed the news, tears welled up and blurred my vision. We made plans for an unexpected visit as we prepared for the memorial service.

We flew up this time to Oregon. Back at the motel, the crashing waves now felt heavy, and a deep sadness washed over my soul. In the chair that my brother had sat in weeks before, I felt a lingering warmth. The return trip made me reflect on life’s fragility and unpredictable nature.

Faith and Comfort in Grief in the Unexpected

The news of my brother’s passing spread, and along with it came a wave of messages and prayers, each one full of hope. During the difficult, unexpected journey of grief, the messages were a steady voice of hope. This Scripture whispered to me as I walked this road, and let me know I was not alone. Psalm 34:18 (NIV); “The Lord is close to the brokenhearted and saves those who are crushed in spirit.” The truth in this verse uplifted me, provided me with strength to carry on, and reminded me of the eternal reunion with my family.

Life’s twists and turns make it vital to seize each moment with those we hold dear. Unexpected changes can happen, but our faith can provide a sense of stability. Amidst our sadness, we may find solace as we turn to loved ones and our faith for support. In the promises of God, we find comfort, hoping to see our lost loved ones again. A promise I find comfort in comes from Revelations 21:4 (NIV). “He will wipe every tear from their eyes. There will be no more death or mourning or crying or pain, for the old order of things has passed away.”

Faith for the Unexpected Journey

When life takes an unexpected turn, faith in God’s plan requires trusting His wisdom, accepting His design, and embracing His plan for growth, especially when things are unclear or challenging. To navigate the unknown with a hopeful outlook, you can find courage by staying grounded, seeking wise counsel, focusing on actions, practicing gratitude, and caring for your well-being.

The Bible says that thanking God in all situations pleases Him and is a path to peace, which opens your heart to His presence. If approached with gratitude, difficult times can spur spiritual maturity and offer a deeper insight into the power of God. Lean on Him and trust Him, especially when life’s unexpected journeys throw you a curveball.

Despite the pain, the unplanned journey possessed a sacred and meaningful quality. I urge everyone to cherish their relationships and find solace in faith when they face unforeseen challenges.

My condolences. The paragraph, “Life’s twists and turns make it vital to seize each moment with those we hold dear. Unexpected changes can happen, but our faith can provide a sense of stability. A promise I find comfort in comes from Revelations 21:4 (NIV). “He will wipe every tear from their eyes. There will be no more death or mourning or crying or pain, for the old order of things has passed away.” – comforted me and blessed me. Being in my 70s, I’ve lost parents, parents-in-law, and my spouse. I’ve lost friends, classmates, and most of my close friends have lost their spouse. Comforting words I needed. Thanks
