The Power of Small Acts
My husband and I love Mediterranean food, and a little cafe near us is one of our favorites. We enjoyed a cup of Turkish coffee after a satisfying meal. The owner loved to serve the coffee in cute, dainty cups. And I love offering small acts of kindness. So, when I saw some butterfly cups in a store, I bought them for the restaurant. They thrilled the owner and led us to a wonderful friendship for many years. The cups cost little, but the minor act of kindness made an enormous difference as I shared my faith with her.
Have you felt moved by the kindness given at the perfect instant? In my message today, we will explore how God often uses small acts to create ripple effects of grace.
Why Small Acts Matter
Small acts of kindness matter in the Christian faith because they are a tangible way to show God’s love to others, are a command from Jesus, and are a visible sign of discipleship that can inspire a ripple effect of compassion. These acts also show spiritual maturity, and people consider them a fruit of the Spirit. They are acts of worship that bring fulfillment and purpose to the giver, creating a more compassionate world by reflecting Christ’s selfless love.
Matthew 25:40 (NIV) reflects this same message: “Whatever you did for one of the least of these brothers and sisters of mine, you did for me.” When we offer small acts of kindness, we reflect Christ’s love in everyday life, and they can make an eternal difference in those around us.
Biblical Examples of Small Acts with Big Impact
Let’s examine a minor action in Scripture that had a major impact. John’s Gospel contains the narrative of the boy possessing five loaves and two fish. The boy gave his meal to the disciples to help them in feeding the crowd. Christ took the minor act and used it to feed 5,000 people with twelve baskets of food left over. God can magnify small offerings and provide for many others. No act is ever too small.
Another example comes from 2 Kings 5. Here we find the story of an Israelite slave girl. She was a servant in the household of Naaman, the leprous commander of the Syrian army. In the story, we see her show compassion to her boss by telling him about the prophet Elisha, who could cure him. Her small act of kindness, despite her own difficult situation, led to Naaman’s healing and conversion to the God of Israel. Her minor act saved many lives.

How to Practice Small Acts Daily
These simple, readily applicable ideas can yield a significant impact on individual lives.
- Smile at a stranger.
- Write a short encouraging note.
- Pray silently for someone you see.
- Pay forward a small kindness (coffee, meal, etc.).
Can you think of other examples? As part of my daily prayer time, I ask God to show me someone to bless with an act of kindness. It helps me to focus on looking for those special moments. If you look for them, God will show you them.
The Ripple Effect of Small Acts of Kindness
Even the smallest act, done in love, has eternal significance. A minor act, such as a word of kindness, a humble service, or faithfulness in a daily task, causes a ripple effect that influences others and shows Christ’s love tangibly, that builds the spiritual kingdom and has lasting spiritual value. God uses ordinary individuals and messy lives, even with doubts and struggles, to make an impact. A single small act of kindness can be the vehicle through which God’s love touches someone and changes their life forever. You may never know the full impact of your kindness, but God does.
Every act of service, whether it’s showing mercy, persevering through opposition, or helping those who are suffering, builds up the body of Christ and glorifies God, contributing to something with eternal value.
Prayer
Dear Heavenly Father, please open my eyes to see those who need a simple act of kindness in their lives. Help me be an instrument to serve others. Let my offerings help to enlarge the kingdom of Christ and be an example to others. In Jesus’ name I pray. Amen.
