Christmas, with its festive decorations and the feel of anticipation in the air, is a wonderful time of year. Twinkling lights cast a warm glow over the town as we enjoy the tasty treats that the holiday brings. I love the cold that nips at my nose, along with the festive music that drifts through the air. Each Christmas season, I look forward to the song “The 12 Days of Christmas,” a tune that always gets me in the holiday spirit.
The song recounts the giving of twelve gifts, each presented on one of the twelve days of Christmas. Each of these gifts is undeniably unique and amusing. In the song’s spirit, I took a fresh look, and at the gifts for spiritual themes related to Christ’s birth and message for this Christmas season.
Let’s unwrap the deeper meaning behind each day and discover 12 Christian Christmas themes to celebrate this season.
The 12 Christian Themes of Christmas
Day 1–A Babe in a Manger
The original first day in the song is a partridge in a pear tree. For my deeper look, day one gives us the baby in the manger, and this day is a gift of love. Christ’s humble birth teaches us about sacrificial love. He is the genuine gift given for our salvation. Scripture: John 3:16 NIV.
Reflection question: How can we show Christ’s love to others this Christmas?
Day 2–Two Testaments in the Bible
Two turtle doves symbolize the Old and New Testaments and gives us the gift of faith. Faith connects us to God’s promises throughout history. Scripture: Hebrews 11:1 NIV.
Reflection question: When life feels uncertain, how can we use the Bible for answers as we deepen our trust in Him?
Day 3–Three Characteristics of Faith
Three French hens in the original song represent faith, hope, and love. As we place our hope in the birth of our Savior, He anchors us through all the seasons. Scripture: 1 Corinthians 13:13 NIV.
Reflection question: What area of your life most needs the hope that comes from remembering Jesus’ birth and resurrection?
Day 4–Four Gospels
Four calling birds = the four Gospels. The Gospels allow us to learn and celebrate the message of Christ’s coming told by Matthew, Mark, Luke, and John. Scripture: Matthew 4:4 NIV.
Reflection question: How can you make more space this Christmas to read the Gospel accounts of Jesus rather than listening to the noise of the world?
Day 5–The Torah, First Five Books of the Bible
Five golden rings recall the first five books of the Bible, known as the Torah. These books are the foundation of the Christian faith and contain the story of creation, the law of Moses, and God’s covenant with his people. Scripture: Deuteronomy 6:4-9 NIV.
Reflection Question: Who in your life might need to learn more about the Christian faith through your actions this season?
Day 6–The Six Days of Creation
Six geese a-laying remind us of the six days of creation. God’s creative power still brings new life today both spiritually and physically. Scripture: Genesis 1:31 NIV.
Reflection Question: How does observing God’s creation like winter skies, snowflakes, evergreens, remind you of His power and care for all He made?
Day 7–The Seven Gifts of the Holy Spirit
Seven swans a-swimming symbolize the seven gifts of the Holy Spirit. As the swans glide gracefully, we find peace and renewal in the Spirit’s presence. Scripture: Isaiah 11:2-3 NIV.
Reflection Question: What could you set aside this week to make room for spiritual rest and renewal in God’s presence?
Day 8–Eight Beatitudes
Eight maids a-milking reflect the Beatitudes and shows us new ways of living taught by Christ. Christmas invites us to embrace fresh starts in faith and forgiveness. Scripture: Matthew 5:3–12 NIV.
Reflection Question: As you enter a new year, what changes or steps of faith might God be calling you to make?
Day 9–Nine Fruits of the Spirit
Nine ladies dancing symbolize the fruit of the Spirit. Joy flows from a heart anchored in Christ, not in worldly gifts. Scripture: Galatians 5:22-23 NIV.
Reflection Question: What small, simple blessings can you celebrate today as reminders of the joy found in knowing Christ?
Day 10–The Ten Commandments
Ten lords a-leaping represent the Ten Commandments. Obedience brings blessing and shows our love for God as we leap for joy. Scripture: Exodus 20:1–17 NIV.
Reflection Question: Is there an area where God is calling you to obey, even when it’s difficult or makes little sense right now?
Day 11–Eleven Faithful Disciples
Eleven pipers piping symbolize the faithful disciples who carried Christ’s message. We’re called to do the same thing by spreading the good news with boldness. Scripture: Matthew 28:19–20 NIV.
Reflection Question: How can you share your faith more boldly, like the disciples, through your words and daily actions this Christmas?
Day 12–The Twelve Points in the Apostles’ Creed
Twelve drummers drumming represent the twelve points of belief in the Apostles’ Creed. Our faith marches forward and carries us through to eternity with Christ. Scripture: John 14:2–3 NIV.
Reflection Question: How does the promise of eternal life change the way you see your challenges and live each day?
Wrapping Up
The “12 Days of Christmas” isn’t just a fun tune, but it can remind us of God’s greatest gifts we find in our faith. I encourage each of us to focus on one theme each day leading up to Christmas. This Christmas, may we unwrap the spiritual gifts that never fade—the love, joy, and hope found only in Jesus.

Heavenly Father, we pray for peace on Earth this Christmas. May the message of peace that the angels proclaimed resonate in every heart. Help us be instruments of peace in our own lives and communities, and bring healing to a world filled with conflict. Amen.
