When Christmas Feels Chaotic without Christ’s Peace
The line snaked around the inside of the building, and I heard angry voices raised in protest as people jostled to maintain their spots in line. Soon, an argument broke out over a popular toy down one aisle. The sights and sounds around me did not feel like the Christmas holiday. Where was Christ’s peace this season.
The music blared overhead, and the sound of John Lennon’s voice singing, “So this is Christmas,” stopped me in my tracks. With a heavy sigh, I understood this is what Christmas means to so many of us now. Instead, dread hung in the air, heavy and suffocating like the scent of impending doom.
Negative feelings like anger, frustration, and dread now cast a pall over the season, which should be filled with laughter and joy.
What transformed our hearts’ celebration of Christmas as a sacred occasion into a commercial spectacle, and what caused this hallowed period to become a mere casual holiday?
“For to us a child is born, to us a son is given, and the government will be on his shoulders. And he will be called Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace.” Isaiah 9:6 NIV.

Remembering the Holy Day
The verse above contains Isaiah’s beautiful prophecy of Jesus’ birth. Their story tells of Jesus, offering a glimpse of Christmas’s genuine spirit. Here are the four names of Christ, each a testament to His character.
- Wonderful
- Mighty
- Everlasting
- Peaceful
In stark contrast to the boisterous holiday season we know now, these words offer a sense of calm.
As you reread the Bible verse, do you feel a sense of peace wash over you? Can you feel your spirit shifting?
The Names that Help Us Find Christ’s Peace
The Wonderful Counselor
This description conveys a feeling of tranquility, something we rarely find in our modern Christmas celebrations. In my vision, a wonderful counselor is a loving God, present beside me, his caring heart listening to my cries for help. His presence offers a sense of warmth. This infant, lying in the manger, offers us eternal hope, and his wisdom guides us as we travel life’s road.
“This also comes from the LORD of hosts; he is wonderful in counsel and excellent in wisdom.” Isaiah 28:29 ESV.
Mighty God and Everlasting Father
Isaiah wrote these words during a time of unrest and wars, a situation mirroring the current state of our world. In that period, Jewish people looked to a powerful protector to emerge, shielding them from those who sought their downfall.
The King of Kings arrived not in glory, but as a tiny baby, helpless and new. In the lowly manger, the silence of the night veiled his true nature. Leaving the splendor of His heavenly throne, the mighty God, who made the universe and all its creatures, came to earth. He came to teach us about love and peace, his voice resonating with a gentle strength. Many people in the world overlooked His message because they expected a warrior God.
Jesus offered eternal life to those willing to follow Him. To those who accepted His message, He offered a gift. He calls us to love, urging us to live in peace with our neighbors harmoniously. Today, the message still carries a revolutionary edge.
“But from now on, the Son of Man will be seated at the right hand of the mighty God.” Luke 22:69 NIV.
Prince of Peace
At last, peace. I love this name the most because of the way it makes me feel. This Christmas season, my soul yearns for God’s peace, a sense of tranquility to settle in my life and the world. I dream of a church dimly lit by flickering candles, of singing traditional carols, and of feeling God’s presence soothe my restless heart.
Finding Christ’s Peace Again
Here are some ways to add peace to our Christmas.
- Prepare your heart during Advent with prayer and meditation.
- Focus on Christ-centered giving.
- Cultivate a peaceful home environment.
- Make Christmas Day sacred.
“Then you will experience God’s peace, which exceeds anything we can understand. His peace will guard your hearts and minds as you live in Christ Jesus.” Philippians 4:7 NLT.
Make This Season Sacred
Allow the quiet serenity of Christ’s peace to permeate your Christmas season this year.
- Schedule quiet family time.
- Read the Christmas story from the Bible as a family.
- Share the love of Christ with a lonely neighbor.
- Give back to your community.

Christ’s peace does seem to get overshadowed by the chaos that follows the secular observance of Christmas. I pray the peace we have as believers can infiltrate the busy season to show others the real reason for the celebration.
