Stories of sacrifice have a way of stopping me in my tracks. When someone gives up their time, comfort, or safety to help another person, it reminds me that goodness still exists in the world. Whether it’s someone helping an elderly neighbor, rescuing an animal in danger, or stepping in to support a stranger in need, acts of selflessness stir something deep within me. They encourage me to look beyond myself and become a better person.
One of the greatest stories of sacrifice comes from the events of Holy Week.
During the sacred week leading up to Easter, each event reminds us of the incredible love Jesus showed through his actions and his suffering. As we reflect on the moments from the Last Supper to the empty tomb, we discover lessons that challenge us, strengthen our faith, and call us to live differently.
Let’s look at three powerful lessons from Holy Week that should continue to shape our faith today.

The Easter Story
The story of Easter unfolds across the pages of the four Gospels of Matthew, Mark, Luke, and John. These passages guide us through the final days of Jesus’ earthly ministry, beginning with his arrival in Jerusalem on Palm Sunday and ending with the miracle of the resurrection.
Each moment during this week reveals something profound about God’s love and his plan for humanity. The events may have taken place over two thousand years ago, but their message is timeless. As we revisit the journey from Maundy Thursday to Easter morning, we can ask ourselves an important question:
How should this story change the way we live out our faith today?
Lesson of Sacrifice from Maundy Thursday
The first lesson comes from the evening Jesus shared the Last Supper with his disciples. The forefathers of the church called this day Maundy Thursday.
After the meal, Jesus did something unexpected. He rose from the table, wrapped a towel around his waist, and began washing the dusty feet of his disciples. The culture of the time would use the lowest servant in the household for this task. Yet Jesus, their teacher and Lord, humbled himself and served them by washing their feet.
Even more remarkable is that Jesus washed the feet of every disciple, including Judas, the one who planned to betray him later that very night.
Jesus knew what was coming, yet He still chose humility and service.
In that moment, he gave his followers a powerful example of what sacrificial love looks like in action.
“And since I, your Lord and Teacher, have washed your feet, you ought to wash each other’s feet. I have given you an example to follow. Do as I have done to you.” John 13:14–15 (NLT).
The lesson for us is clear. Jesus calls us to serve others with humility, even when it is inconvenient, uncomfortable, or undeserved. True love does not wait for perfect circumstances or perfect people; instead, it serves anyway.
Lesson of Sacrifice from Good Friday
The next lesson comes from the darkest day of Holy Week, Good Friday.
During the night, the authorities arrested Jesus and brought him before religious leaders in a secret trial. Though they struggled to find legitimate charges against him, they pushed for his execution. They brought Jesus before the Roman governor, Pontius Pilate. Pilate found no fault in him, and he eventually gave in to the demands of the crowd and sentenced Jesus to death by crucifixion.
Jesus was innocent, yet He endured humiliation, suffering, and the agony of the cross.
Why?
Because of His sacrificial love for us.
The cross stands as the ultimate example of sacrificial love. Jesus laid down his life so that humanity could have a relationship with God.
“16 We know what real love is because Jesus gave up his life for us. So we also ought to give up our lives for our brothers and sisters. 17 If someone has enough money to live well and sees a brother or sister in need but shows no compassion—how can God’s love be in that person?” 1 John 3:16-17 (NLT).
Lesson from the Resurrection
The last part of the story unfolds sometime between Saturday night and early Sunday morning. After three days in the grave, Jesus rose from the dead, revealing the power of God over death itself.
Early in the morning, Mary and several other women went to the tomb to prepare Jesus’ body according to Jewish burial customs. When they arrived, they found the stone rolled away and the tomb empty. An angel appeared and told them the astonishing news that Jesus had risen.
With the tomb found empty, everything shifted. It proclaimed the defeat of death and the renewal of hope. The resurrection of Jesus from the grave guarantees eternal life for those who have faith in him. The resurrection marks the high point of the Easter story and serves as the bedrock of our Christian beliefs.
“Whoever believes in the Son has eternal life, but whoever rejects the Son will not see life, for God’s wrath remains on them.” John 3:36 (NIV).
The Sacrifice Lessons of Holy Week
These biblical lessons from the Easter story should do more than warm our hearts for what Jesus has done for us. They should challenge us to become stronger and more faithful followers of Christ. God never intended his story to make us feel good. His sacrifice calls us to take these truths to heart and allow them to transform how we live each day.
Through His sacrifice, Jesus showed us he is the way, the truth, and the life. His love for us was so great that he gave everything so that we could receive forgiveness and restoration to God. Because of him, Jesus offers the gift of eternal life. All that is required of us is to place our faith and trust in Him.
“For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life.” John 3:16 (NIV).
Prayer for Easter

Lord Jesus Christ, you became human and shared in the realities of our world. During your life on Earth, you brought hope, wisdom, and salvation to many. Your words continue to challenge, encourage, and guide us today.
At the end of your earthly life, you took upon yourself suffering and transformed the cross into a sign of hope and redemption. When the world feels burdened by pain, when people feel isolated, mourn their loved ones, or sacrifice their strength to care for others, we turn to you.
In faith and humility, we entrust ourselves to you. Strengthen our hearts, renew our hope, and help us walk faithfully in your love.
Amen.

The lessons we learn from Easter can be applied every day. Have a blessed Holy Week!
Thanks Melissa and they can teach us something new every year. Happy and blessed Holy Week.
“God didn’t tell us this story to make us feel good.” Oh, my Yvonne. That’s a painful, yet vital reminder for us. Could there be any great gift than what Jesus did for us? He gave His life for me and I am so unworthy of that sacrifice. He loves me in spite of my faults. I feel like sinking into the dirt at His feet, just like the sinful woman–that’s where I belong. What a painful and inspiring message for Easter, my friend. Thank you.
I feel the same Katherine. I’m so unworthy of His grace and what He did on the cross for me. But we are also blessed by what He did. Happy Easter to you and yours.
Beautiful and powerful, Yvonne. And I like how you challenge us to not just have warm feelings from these stories, but to “become stronger and more faithful followers of Christ.” It continues to change our lives! Blessed Easter to you and your family.
Thank you Karen. Yes, these stories are meant for more than warm feelings. Happy Easter to you and yours.
Jesus’ calm resolve to treat each one with dignity, even when He knew the betrayal and denial that lay ahead, truly challenges me. Amazing love!
It challenges me too especially because I don’t think I could do it. Thanks Debbie and Happy Easter.
Excellent post! I love what you said, about how acts of selflessness encourage us to look beyond ourselves and become a better person. It’s true! Jesus’s model of washing others’ feet is such a powerful example of humility.
Thanks Jessica. The washing of the feet is a perfect example. Blessings
