Not Enough

When You Feel You Are Not Enough

Have you ever gone through a season when you felt like you were not enough? I know I slip into that mindset sometimes. My thoughts during those times can range from wondering if my writing is good enough to questioning whether I am doing enough in my faith life.

When I allow these harmful thoughts to invade my mind, they can lead me down a rabbit hole of negativity. I may look fine on the outside, hiding my uncertainties behind a happy mask, while inwardly I suffer alone. In those moments, the enemy whispers lies of doubt into my ear, trying to separate me from God’s will and purpose for my life.

On top of that struggle, I sometimes beat myself up for what I see as a lack of faith. I stare at my Bible, hang my head, and mutter, “I’m not enough.” But it is time to get off that roller coaster and turn to God’s Word to learn what to do when these feelings come.

Not Enough

Forefathers of Faith Who Felt Not Enough

When I open my Bible, I find stories that remind me I am not alone in this struggle. One of my favorites is the story of Peter.

During the Passover meal, Peter said, “Even if I have to die with You, I will never deny You.” (Matthew 26:35, NIV). Yet just a few hours later, he did the exact opposite and denied Christ three times. We find this in Matthew 26:75 NIV: “Then Peter remembered the word Jesus had spoken: ‘Before the rooster crows, you will disown me three times.’ And he went outside and wept bitterly.”

I can only imagine the inadequacy Peter must have felt in that moment.

When I Feel Not Enough

Christ is the answer when I feel like I am not enough on my own. That may sound discouraging at first, but it is actually a blessing. God never asks me to be enough by myself. His provision means I do not have to carry that burden alone.

When I feel inadequate, I can lean on Scripture that reminds me of God’s strength, love, and grace. Verses such as 2 Corinthians 12:9, Psalm 139:14, and Philippians 4:13 remind me that my value comes from God, not from my own accomplishments. His promises reassure me: I am loved, chosen, and strengthened by Him.

We Are Not Alone

The Bible shows us many people who were imperfect, weak, and unqualified by human standards, yet God still used them for His glory.

David committed terrible sins. Jonah ran from God. Elijah became overwhelmed and discouraged. Paul persecuted Christians before becoming one of the greatest voices for the gospel.

Their stories remind me that God does not call the qualified; He qualifies those He calls.

God Makes Me Enough

When I feel inadequate in my calling, I can draw strength from God’s promises. He chose me for His purpose, not because of my competence, but because of His grace.

Here are a few truths to hold onto:

The Good News

A few years ago, I traveled to Israel and visited a place that left a deep impression on me. History identifies this as the spot on the Sea of Galilee where Jesus prepared breakfast for his disciples after his resurrection. There is a sculpture there marking the place where Jesus restored Peter after Peter had denied Him three times.

In John 21, Jesus asks Peter three times if he loves him. Those three questions mirror Peter’s three denials. But instead of condemning Peter, Jesus restored him and called him forward, telling him to feed His sheep.

What a beautiful reminder that my failures and feelings of not being enough do not have to define me. When I surrender those feelings to God’s grace, He brings restoration, healing, and renewed purpose. Christ makes me enough for His purposes.

Prayer

Heavenly Father, you are good and faithful. I am feeling overwhelmed and inadequate, as though I am not measuring up in my work, my relationships, my faith journey, or even in everyday life. Forgive me for holding onto the lie that I am not enough. Today, I choose to hold onto your truth instead. Replace my anxiety with Your peace. Help me live with the confidence that my value comes from Jesus, not from my own achievements. In Jesus’ name, Amen.

Oh my ! This message hits home. My physical body can’t do the activities that I enjoyed in the past. But, God is teaching me to be thankful that there are other ways to glorify Him and share His love. Although I can’t lift items or run fast, I can pray for others and help with missions in various ways. Thank you for this encouragement. Have a blessed week!

Thanks Melissa. God always helps us find a way because we are enough for Him. Praying and helping with missions is a great way. And don’t forget about how much your writing encourages others. Blessings my friend

I am so thankful for our Father’s mercy and grace. I know I’m undeserving, but He loves me anyway. Your message offers much hope and the joy of knowing that, in our Savior’s eyes, we are enough. Thank you, Yvonne.

Thank you Katherine. I think many people struggle with not being enough for Christ. We just need the grace He gave. Blessings

So good, Yvonne. Because Christ is enough, He makes us enough. I surmise we all go through these times and feelings of inadequacy in our faith journey. Yet, Peter’s example and the scriptures and points you share drive home the point that God makes us enough.

We are enough in Christ. It’s so easy to let the enemy whisper that we are not. Thanks Karen and blessings.

This is SO SO good. As an Enneagram 3, I get so down in the dumps when I don’t feel like I’m accomplishing anything… but that’s such a lie, because my worth has NOTHING to do with my accomplishments. As you put it, “My value comes from God, not from my own accomplishments.” AMEN!

I do understand cause I was preaching to myself too. I needed the same reminder. Blessings to you Jessica
