The smell of coffee filled the room as people slowly made their way inside. Some came for a warm meal. Others came because they needed someone to notice them. I’ve learned that sometimes the greatest hunger people carry is the need to feel seen. As I served alongside volunteers at The Salvation Army, it reminded me that authentic Christianity often begins with simple acts of compassion.
The Salvation Army’s slogan of “Soup, Soap, and Salvation” may sound simple, but those three words capture the heart of the Gospel in action. Christians throughout history have used short phrases to carry mission and purpose:
- “Soup, Soap, and Salvation.” (Salvation Army)
- “Make a friend, be a friend, bring a friend to Christ.” (Cursillo Movement)
- Even Jesus’ own summary: love God and love your neighbor. (Gospel)
Simple words. Lifelong calling.
In today’s world, people are starving for authentic Christianity that looks like service instead of performance. What does Christianity look like when faith becomes visible?
Authentic Christianity
Jesus Met Physical Needs
Early in my mission training, we learned the gospel message is hard to hear for someone who is starving. Jesus shows this throughout his ministry on earth. He fed, healed and cared for the overlooked in society before he talked to them about faith. We see this played out in Matthew 14:13–21 (NIV) in the feeding of the 5,000. In passages like the feeding of the 5,000, Jesus showed compassion for both physical and spiritual hunger.
Individuals want to know they matter to us, and we can show that by meeting their physical needs. People are often more open to hearing about God when they first experience His love through action. The goal is never just temporary relief but eternal hope.
Friendship Opens Doors
Another way those around us learn about faith is through their friendships with Christians at work or in social settings. Many people come to faith because someone cared enough to listen, walk beside them, and love them. Evangelism is not just a project. It is a relationship.
Many churches are comfortable feeding people. Others are comfortable talking about salvation. Others preach salvation but rarely sit beside broken individuals long enough to earn trust. Jesus did both, and so should we.
Christ never meant for the Church to choose between compassion and salvation.
The Gospel is both lived and spoken.
We Are All Called to Serve
Ministry does not require a platform or title, but it is still something we are all called to do. Serving can look different for each of us. Some examples include:
- Sharing a meal
- Offering friendship
- Listening without judgment
- Praying with someone
- Meeting practical needs
We can summarize the heartbeat of the Gospel in service to those around us. We can accomplish it as we:
- meet needs,
- build relationships,
- point people to Jesus.
Authentic Christianity Sees Individuals
In a world filled with loneliness, hunger, and fear, perhaps these simple sayings still matter because they reflect the heart of Jesus. Feed the hungry. Love others well. Point them to Christ. Sometimes the Gospel begins with soup, grows through friendship, and leads to salvation.
Who around us needs compassion before they are ready to hear the truth?
Prayer
Lord Jesus,
Thank You for showing us what true ministry looks like. You fed the hungry, comforted the broken, healed the hurting, and pointed people to the hope of salvation. Help us follow your example.
Teach us to see those around us the way You see them, not as projects to complete, but as souls deeply loved by You. Give us willing hands to serve, compassionate hearts to listen, and courage to share the truth of the Gospel with grace and love.
May we never separate kindness from truth or compassion from salvation. Let our lives reflect Your light in both word and action.
Use us to make a friend, be a friend, and bring a friend to Christ. And may we remember that sometimes a warm meal, a listening ear, or a simple act of kindness can open the door for someone to encounter You.
