Let’s continue our journey through the Beatitudes. Have you discovered one that especially speaks to your heart—or perhaps one you struggle to understand or live out? For me, “Blessed are the meek” has always been one of the hardest because I naturally like to be in control and rely on my strength instead of God’s.

Here are the next four Beatitudes for us to consider in our lives.

Blessed are the Merciful

Mercy is compassion or forgiveness shown toward someone whom it is within one’s power to punish or harm. For Christians, we learn of mercy through the cross of Christ. Because of God’s compassion for us, He offered us the forgiveness of our sins with the shed blood of Christ instead of punishing us for them. Jesus sets the example for us to follow in how to be merciful. We are called to show mercy to all people as if we were showing compassion to God himself. We see this idea in Matthew 25:40: “And the King will say, I tell you the truth, when you did it to one of the least of these my brothers and sisters, you were doing it to me!”

The people listening to Christ would understand mercy from the Old Testament prophet Isaiah. In chapter 58, and in the Book of Tobit, he gives us a picture of the works of mercy. They are:

• Feed the Hungry
• Give a drink to the thirsty
• Clothe the naked
• Shelter the homeless
• Comfort the imprisoned
• Visit the sick
• Bury the dead

Imagine how different our world might look if we all practiced mercy daily. Over the years, I’ve learned that we often express mercy in the smallest acts. I’ve seen it in volunteers serving meals to hungry children in Kenya, in someone quietly paying for another person’s groceries, and in believers who choose forgiveness instead of resentment. Mercy changes lives. It begins with our own.

Blessed are the Pure of Heart

We carry out acts of pure love when we do things with no ulterior motives. We seek to gain nothing when we act with a pure heart. Living with completely pure motives is far more difficult than we’d like to admit. I think of the times I’ve helped someone and secretly hoped for a thank-you or a word of appreciation. When it never came, I realized my motives weren’t as pure as I wanted to believe. God gently reminded me that acts of love honor him, not satisfy my desire for recognition.

Jesus promises an incredible reward to those who pursue purity of heart: they will see God. Throughout Scripture, very few people experienced even a glimpse of God’s glory. That promise reminds me how precious a pure heart is in God’s eyes.

I loved the beautiful way Billy Graham described someone who is pure of heart. “The pure in heart are the only ones who can know what it means to be supremely happy. Their hearts are pure toward God and, as a result, are pure toward their fellowmen. They are happy because they envy not another man’s praise.” Something for all of us to strive toward in our Christian walk.

Blessed are the Peacemakers

True peace begins long before we try to reconcile others. It begins when Christ transforms our own hearts. As we learn humility, mercy, forgiveness, and righteousness, His peace naturally flows through us into our relationships.

I’ve learned that being a peacemaker doesn’t always mean avoiding conflict. Sometimes it means having hard conversations with love and grace. Other times it means choosing forgiveness when holding onto resentment would be easier. God’s peace isn’t passive. It transforms relationships.

Blessed are the Persecuted

Even if we define our lives around the Beatitudes, life will not always be rosy. As long as sin exists in the world, believers in Christ will face persecution. Since the beginning of the Church, followers of Christ have faced persecution. Churches get burned down; prison time awaits many believers, and martyrdom still happens. And the Bible tells us that persecution will continue to increase.

While I’ve never faced imprisonment for my faith, I’ve met believers around the world who have. Their courage reminds me that following Christ has always required faith, whether the opposition comes through ridicule, rejection, or persecution.

Our country is not immune to opposition because of our faith. While our experiences may look different from those of believers in other parts of the world, we may still face pressure to remain silent about what we believe. I’ve held jobs that did not allow us to talk about faith, even forbidding employees from carrying a Bible into the office. Another job did not allow me to share about events at our church, even if they were community things like fairs.

The Beatitudes aren’t simply beautiful words to admire. They are an invitation to become more like Christ. As we allow Him to shape our hearts, we become people marked by mercy, purity, peace, and unwavering faith, even when life is difficult.

May we not simply admire the Beatitudes, but allow them to shape the way we love, serve, forgive, and follow Jesus every day.

The Beatitudes aren’t a checklist to complete; they’re a portrait of a heart being transformed by Christ. As we surrender more of ourselves to Him, He shapes us into people who reflect His mercy, His peace, and His love in a world that desperately needs all three.
