I stood on the hillside where Jesus preached the Sermon on the Mount, looking across the Sea of Galilee and imagining the crowd gathered around Him. The setting was peaceful, yet the words spoken there would forever challenge the way people understood God’s kingdom. As I stood there, I couldn’t help but wonder what it would have been like to hear Jesus speak those life-changing words. We are blessed.

We find the Sermon on the Mount in the Gospel of Matthew. These words offer us a glimpse into a way of life that pleases God. The Beatitudes don’t replace God’s commands. They reveal the heart God desires in those who follow Him. The eight Beatitudes offer us an approach to peaceful living in a chaotic world. For the next two blogs, we will dig deeper into these beautiful words of Christ.

Blessed are the poor in spirit

Early in my faith walk, I used to think that this beatitude required me to reject all worldly possessions to follow Christ. As I grew in my faith, I learned that “poor in spirit” refers to the condition of our hearts and not our wallets. Christ calls us to be humble servants for Him. When we are humble, we think of others before ourselves. We seek peace with our brothers and sisters instead of trying to get our way. Humility allows our hearts to be open to the movement of the Holy Spirit. God calls us to serve others, pray for our neighbors, and love our enemies.

I’ve discovered that humility rarely comes naturally. God often uses disappointments, failures, and unanswered prayers to remind me how much I need Him. Those moments have become some of my greatest teachers.

Blessed are they that mourn

No one enjoys grieving over sin. It’s much easier to excuse it or compare ourselves with others. Yet the closer I grow to Christ, the more I recognize my need for his grace. We must learn to mourn for the sins in our lives, and for the sins of the world. When we acknowledge our fallen nature, God will comfort us with His presence and forgiveness. Mourning is called blessed because our eyes are open to what God offers us. He offers us a better future with Him. Sharing the Good News of Christ with our neighbors provides them with God’s comfort.

The first two Beatitudes remind us that following Christ begins with humility and repentance. As we recognize our need for him, he transforms our hearts from the inside out.

The longer I walk with Christ, the more aware I become of my need for His grace. That awareness doesn’t leave me hopeless. Instead, it reminds me how desperately I need the Savior who promises comfort and forgiveness.

Blessed are the Meek

Meekness is often mistaken for weakness. Our culture celebrates people who demand attention, fight for recognition, and insist on having the last word. Jesus offers a different picture of strength. This description remains far from the way the Bible talks about it. Self-controlled, obedient, and submissive to the ways of Christ better describes a meek Christian. Another explanation might be a humble person who thinks of others first. Jesus wants us to be meek, especially in our world today, when so many seek to satisfy their needs above all else. God promises a grand inheritance for the meek in the next world. And those who live meekly in today’s environment will leave behind a better world for those who follow.

Blessed are those who hunger for righteousness

Our next Beatitude looks at how we should view righteousness. God calls us to hunger after justice and righteousness. We must stand up for the poor and the oppressed. But this is more than just tweeting or posting about these problems. God wants us to step into the lives of those who suffer and help to shoulder their burdens. We see this message reinforced in James 1:27 “Religion that God our Father accepts as pure and faultless is this: to look after orphans and widows in their distress and to keep oneself from being polluted by the world.” God will satisfy those who help someone in distress. Don’t we feel better after helping someone else, like serving Thanksgiving meals at a homeless shelter? That is part of the reward God offers us when we seek His justice.

Over the years, serving orphans has taught me that compassion isn’t something we post online. It’s something we practice.

The Study Continues

Jesus wasn’t giving us eight impossible ideals. He was showing us what life looks like when our hearts belong to Him.

Next time, we’ll continue our journey through the Beatitudes as Jesus teaches us about mercy, purity, peacemaking, and standing firm in faith.
