Jude

The Study of the Biblical Book of Jude

Let’s continue our journey through the New Testament as we explore the powerful message found in the book of Jude. Although Jude contains only one chapter, its message is direct and important. Jude calls believers to stand firm in the truth, guard against false teaching, grow in their faith, and remain faithful to Christ.

Jude wrote to believers facing spiritual deception, but his message still speaks to us today. We live in a world filled with competing voices and ideas, making it important for Christians to know God’s Word and recognize what is true.

As Paul reminds us:

“For everything that was written in the past was written to teach us, so that through the endurance taught in the Scriptures and the encouragement they provide we might have hope.” Romans 15:4 (NIV).

As you read this letter, take time to reflect on these questions:

  • What do you think is the key message of this chapter?
  • What did you learn from this chapter?
  • Which point in this chapter spoke to you the most? How did it affect you?
  • Why do you think God included this chapter in the Bible?
  • What was happening during this time in history, and why was this letter written?
Jude

Background of Jude

  • Author: Jude, who identifies himself as a servant of Jesus Christ and a brother of James.
  • Date Written: in the latter half of the first century.
  • Length: One chapter.
  • Keyword: Contend.
  • Key Verse: “Dear friends, although I was very eager to write to you about the salvation we share, I felt compelled to write and urge you to contend for the faith that was once for all entrusted to God’s holy people.” (Jude 1:3 NIV).
  • Purpose: To warn believers about false teachers who had entered.

Historical Context

Jude wrote during a time when Christianity was growing, but the early church also faced dangers from within. False teachers had entered Christian communities and sought to distort God’s truth. Some used God’s grace as an excuse for immoral behavior and rejected the authority of Jesus Christ.

Throughout his letter, Jude uses examples familiar to his original readers to show that rebellion against God has consequences. He refers to Israel’s unbelief after leaving Egypt, rebellious angels, Sodom and Gomorrah, Cain, Balaam, and Korah.

Despite these strong warnings, Jude ends his letter with encouragement and hope. Believers are called not only to recognize false teaching but also to strengthen their own faith and pray life while they remain in God’s love. He encourages them to show mercy to those who doubt and trust God to keep them faithful.

Summary of Jude

The Book of Jude is a strong call for Christians to remain faithful to the truth of the gospel.

Jude warns believers that false teachers had entered the church. Their lives and teachings did not reflect the truth of Christ, and Jude reminds his readers that rebellion and deception against God are serious matters that come with consequences.

But Jude does not just tell Christians to identify what is wrong. He tells them how to respond.

Believers should build themselves up in their faith, pray in the Holy Spirit, remain in God’s love, wait expectantly for Christ, and show mercy to those struggling with doubt or deception.

Jude concludes with one of the most beautiful expressions of praise in the New Testament, reminding us that God can keep us from stumbling and bring us into His presence with great joy.

Key Messages from Jude

1. Contend for the faith: Jude encourages believers to “contend for the faith” entrusted to God’s people. This does not mean Christians should become argumentative or hostile. Instead, we should know what we believe, understand Scripture, recognize false teaching, and stand firm in God’s truth.

2. Be alert to false teaching: False teaching isn’t always easy to recognize. Jude warns that ungodly people had slipped into the church. Christians need spiritual discernment.

3. Remember the consequences of rebellion: Jude uses several examples from the past to remind his readers that rejecting God has consequences. Remembering what God did in the past can help us remain faithful in the present.

4. Build up our faith: We strengthen our faith through Scripture, prayer, worship, Christian fellowship, and obedience to God.

5. Show mercy to those who doubt: People struggling with questions or those influenced by false ideas do not always need condemnation. Sometimes they need someone willing to listen, pray, patiently share truth, and point them back to Christ.

6. Trust God to keep you faithful: Our faithfulness matters, but we do not depend on our own strength. God is faithful. He can strengthen us, guide us, and keep us as we follow Him.

Applying Jude Today

We can live out the teachings of Jude by remembering these three truths from the book:

  • Know God’s truth and stand firm in your faith.
  • Respond to doubt and deception with both truth and mercy.
  • Trust God to strengthen you and keep you faithful.

Dear Heavenly Father, thank you for giving us your word to guide us and help us recognize what is true. Give us wisdom and discernment when we encounter teachings and ideas that do not agree with your truth. Help us stand firm in our faith without becoming prideful or unloving. Teach us to show mercy to those who doubt and patiently point others toward Jesus. Strengthen our faith through prayer and your word, and help us remain faithful in a world filled with many competing voices. Thank you, that we do not walk this journey alone. You can keep us from stumbling and bring us into your presence with great joy. May our lives honor you and point others toward Christ. In Jesus’ name, Amen.

The book of Jude reminds me that every book of the Bible is important. Whether the book is filled with many words or not so many words, God has a message for us. Have a blessed day! 🙂

I’m thankful that we have a teaching team at our church and not a lead pastor who does most of the preaching. While there is only one person preaching each week, our team meets weekly. They develop the teaching plan together and discuss the primary thoughts of each sermon. This is a great way to unify our teaching team, help them fight against pride, and uphold God’s truth. Thanks for sharing about Jude and his message.

Our church does it that way too and it is a good way to do it like you said. Thanks Stephen and God bless.

Wow! Yours is the only other church I’ve heard of that does it this way, aside from our sister church that used to be just a 2nd campus of our church. It’s the way the early church did their teaching, too!
