Revelation

The Study of the Biblical Book of Revelation

Today, we reach a very special milestone in our journey through the Bible. As we open the last book of Scripture, Revelation, we also celebrate completing something very close to my heart.

My dad began the work of writing a short Bible study for each book of the Bible. He hoped to help others better understand God’s Word and grow closer to Him through Scripture. After his passing, I continued the work he started, and today, with this final study, I have completed that journey.

Although this series is ending, our journey of learning from God’s Word never ends. There is always something more God wants to teach us as we spend time in His presence and study the Scriptures.

Let’s continue our journey through the New Testament one last time as we explore the powerful message found in the book of Revelation.

Revelation

Revelation

Many people approach Revelation with fear or confusion because of its visions, symbols, and descriptions of the end times. John wrote it to help strengthen our faith, encourage us to remain faithful, and remind us that God will fulfill his promises.

“For everything that was written in the past was written to teach us, so that through the endurance taught in the Scriptures and the encouragement they provide we might have hope.”* Romans 15:4 (NIV).

As you read this book, take time to reflect on these questions:

  • What do you think is the key message of this chapter?
  • What did you learn from this chapter?
  • Which point in this chapter spoke to you the most? How did it affect you?
  • Why do you think God included this chapter in the Bible?
  • What was happening during this time in history, and why was this book written?

Background of Revelation

  • Author: John.
  • Date Written: Around AD 95–96.
  • Length: 22 chapters.
  • Keyword: Victory.
  • Key Verse: “I am the Alpha and the Omega, the First and the Last, the Beginning and the End.” (22:13 NIV).
  • Purpose: To reveal Jesus Christ in His glory, encourage believers to remain faithful through suffering and persecution, warn against spiritual compromise, and assure God’s people of Christ’s ultimate victory over evil and the promise of eternal life with Him.

Summary of Revelation

The book of Revelation begins with a vision of the risen and glorified Jesus Christ. The angel instructs John to write what he sees and send the message to seven churches.

In chapters 2 and 3, Jesus speaks to these churches. He recognizes their faithfulness, warns them about their weaknesses, and calls them to repentance and perseverance. These messages remind us that Christ knows His church and cares about the spiritual condition of His people.

Chapters 4 and 5 take us into a heavenly scene where God sits upon His throne, surrounded by worship. We see Jesus revealed as the Lamb who died in our place, which makes him worthy to open the scroll. This powerful image reminds us that Christ’s sacrifice and victory are central to God’s plan.

The following chapters describe a series of visions involving seals, trumpets, and bowls of judgment. These passages reveal the seriousness of sin, the consequences of rebellion against God, and the spiritual battles taking place.

Throughout these visions, we see the conflict between God’s kingdom and the forces of evil. Satan seeks to deceive and destroy, but his power is limited. God remains sovereign even when the world appears to be filled with chaos.

Revelation also describes the fall of Babylon, which represents worldly power, corruption, and opposition to God. The message reminds believers not to place their hope in earthly systems or possessions that will pass away.

In chapter 19, heaven rejoices over God’s victory, and we see Christ pictured as the victorious King of kings and Lord of lords.

Chapters 20 through 22 bring the book to its powerful conclusion. We see God defeat evil, and we see His final judgment. John sees and describes a new heaven and a new earth.

We see one of the most beautiful promises in Revelation 21:4, where God promises to wipe away every tear. Death, mourning, crying, and pain will no longer exist.

The book ends with the promise of Christ’s return and an invitation to receive the gift of eternal life.

Key Messages from Revelation

1. Jesus Christ is victorious: Revelation reminds us that Jesus has already overcome sin and death through His sacrifice and resurrection. Although evil continues to exist in our world, it will not have the final victory. Christ is King of kings and Lord of lords. We can face the future with confidence because our Savior reigns.

2. Remain faithful during difficult times: The seven churches faced challenges that tested their faith. Some suffered persecution, while others struggled with temptation and spiritual compromise. Jesus called them to remain faithful, even when following Him came at a cost. We still face challenges today, and the call remains the same. Our faith should not depend on comfortable circumstances.

3. God is always in control: Revelation contains frightening images of conflict, destruction, and judgment. Yet throughout the book, God’s throne remains central. Nothing surprises Him, and nothing can prevent His plans from being fulfilled. When our world feels uncertain, we can find peace in knowing that God remains sovereign.

4. Be careful not to compromise your faith: Jesus warned several churches about allowing worldly influences, false teaching, and spiritual complacency to weaken their relationship with Him. These warnings still apply today. We must examine our hearts, remain grounded in Scripture, and avoid allowing the values of the world to replace God’s truth.

5. Evil and injustice will not last forever: We live in a world filled with suffering, violence, injustice, and brokenness. It feels as though evil is winning. Revelation assures us that God sees what is happening and that His justice will prevail. We may not understand His timing, but we can trust His righteousness.

6. God promises a new heaven and a new earth: One of the greatest messages of Revelation is the promise of restoration. God will make all things new. The pain, grief, and suffering that are part of our lives today will not exist forever. For those who belong to Christ, eternity holds the promise of living in God’s presence, where death and sorrow are gone.

7. Live with hope and expectation: Revelation concludes with the promise that Jesus will return. We do not know when that day will come, and we should be careful about trying to predict dates or interpret every world event as a sign of the end. Instead, we should live each day, sharing God’s love and remaining ready for Christ’s return.

Applying Revelation Today

We can live out the teachings of Revelation by remembering these three truths from the book:

Remain faithful to Christ even when life is difficult. Our circumstances may change, but God’s promises remain the same. We can trust Him through uncertainty, suffering, and trials.

Keep our focus on God’s eternal promises instead of the temporary things of this world. The world offers many distractions, but we must anchor our hope in Jesus Christ and the eternal life He promises.

Live each day with hope, knowing that Jesus is victorious, and God will make all things new. We do not need to fear the future because we know the One who holds it. Our responsibility is to love God, serve others, and share the hope of Christ with those around us.
