Proverbs 31:25 “She is clothed with strength and dignity, and she laughs without fear of the future.”

Have you ever known someone who wins everything? Someone that seems to be the luckiest person in the world. We had a friend like that a few years back. She entered every drawing she could find. She won washing machines, jet skis and lots of other things. It was always amazing to hear her stories of what she had won recently. She would laugh with glee each time she won.

My mom was also very lucky when it came to winning things. Even as a young child, I remember my mom winning things. When we lived in Canada, she had entered some drawing and forgot about it till weeks later when a huge box arrived at the door. It was a 3 foot purple cow stuffed animal. I got the pleasure of it sitting on my bed for many years while growing up. Mom would always say it was the luck of the Irish and we would laugh.

I enter an occasional drawing when I see them but not as many as our friend or my mom. I do not win as often as either of them. A few months ago, I got lucky and I did win a lovely necklace. It is costume jewelry and I wear it frequently. It is white and gold beads and has a gold medallion that hangs on it. The medallion says “She Laughs – Proverbs 31:25.”  The picture below shows the silver version of the necklace. It was made by Blue Soul Designs and that is who provided the photo. Once I got the necklace in the mail, I decide to look up the entire verse. I posted it at the top of this blog. The verse has really resonated with me recently. Sometime life can be difficult. People lose jobs, kids get sick, cars breakdown unexpectedly, and family members die. How can we laugh at such times in our life? The more I thought about this and studied this verse, the more I began to understand. This verse is not about having a good, hearty laugh when we are struggling with life’s issue. Although sometimes a good belly laugh will do the soul good. This verse is more about remembering. It tells us that no matter what the future holds for us, we know that God has us in the palm of His hand and will take care of us. Not matter what, if we are in Christ, we will spend eternity with God. When struggles hit, we can think on our future life with Christ and laugh at how small these troubles will seem when we dwell with Christ forever.

After our son died, I wanted to do something to help others. I was hopeful that helping others would help me find my joy again. I had not heard my call to mission work yet. I decided I would do some volunteer work at the local hospital. After some initial training, I was assigned to the ICU waiting room. My duties included calling the nurse’s station to see if families could come in, getting water or coffee for the families and just answering questions or talking with those that waited. I started to really notice the differences in families that were Christians verse those that were not. The Christian families still struggled with the illnesses of their loved ones but there was a deeper sense of peace with them. They knew God was in control and no matter the outcome, God would still love them and they could still trust Him. Although they did not laugh outwardly, you knew that deep within there souls was a joy. A joy that told them that even if their loved one died, they would all be together again someday. A joy that surpasses all understanding.

What are you struggling with today? God loves you and He is walking with you through your troubles. You may not feel like laughing at the moment but God will restore you actual laughter in the future. Hold on to the hope of our future with Christ. Laugh at the though that this is all temporary and our treasures are stored up in heaven awaiting our arrival. I look forward with such Joy to that day because I will see my son again, and my parents and many others who have gone on before me.
