The word “memorial” in the New Testament is a translation of the Greek word mnemosunon, which means “a token of remembrance.” The earliest biblical memorials involved the deliberate placement of stones—a physical act of remembrance—to honor God’s acts of grace. This practice then moved onto placing markers on graves, each a silent testament to a life lived. And the Bible encourages believers to decorate graves with reverence, humility, and piety. Religious inscriptions and quotes serve as reminders of the deceased’s faith.
Our Markers
What message do you want to leave behind for the world to see on your grave marker? In a quiet corner of a Dallas/Fort Worth cemetery, in a section called Babyland, lies my son, his small grave marked with a simple stone. A heavy silence hangs in the air as we walk past row upon row of tiny graves, each a stark reminder of lives cut short. Every simple marker, etched with faded names, speaks of grief, the quiet ache of loss echoing through the years.
As we drove past the adult sections, the stark difference in the monuments was striking. Some graves hold only simple markers, while others contain elaborate sculptures that attempt to capture the essence of the departed. How do you encapsulate a person’s entire life, with all its joys, sorrows, and complexities, into a mere dash on a tombstone?

Messages from Grave Markers
These monuments, with their ornate details and imposing presence, often speak volumes about the character of the person buried below. One marker, adorned with intricately sculpted shoes, purses, and shopping bags, displayed the playful quote, “shop till you drop,” in elegant script. This person’s love of shopping is clear, and they likely wished to be remembered by friends and family for their exquisite taste and thoughtful gifts.
In contrast, the last scene of Schindler’s List shows a simple, understated grave marker detailing Oskar Schindler’s life and the 1200 Jews he saved from the horrors of the Holocaust. Many people visit his grave, leaving behind smooth, gray stones as quiet tokens of remembrance and gratitude for his life’s work. The stones accumulate, a silent testament to his impact.
As we contemplate our lives, what legacy do we hope to create, what impact do we wish to have on the world?
Memorial Markers
I think if asked to speak at a friend’s funeral, many people would gladly share anecdotes filled with laughter and happy memories of times spent together. But would they even mention the person’s faith? Are they aware of the crucial role Jesus plays in their spiritual lives and their relationship with God? Does the way we live each day reveal what we hold most dear? Does our devotion to God and Jesus shine through in our actions and words, making it clear to those around us?
We all hope that our legacy will live on, that others will remember our actions long after we’re gone. But what lasting impression do you wish to leave on their minds? What moments or characteristics do you hope they recall? Christians should strive to be remembered for their unwavering faith, their dedication to living a life that reflects God’s teachings, their acts of selfless service, and their enduring hope in the promise of eternal life through Jesus Christ.
A Legacy of Faith
Christians can live a life others remember, marked by acts of kindness, compassion, and a life reflecting God’s unwavering love and grace. To leave a lasting Christian legacy, consistently pray, study the Bible, serve others, mentor younger believers, share your testimony, build strong family and church relationships, and ensure your actions reflect your faith, inspiring others to follow Christ.
Remember, a legacy focused on me only serves my ego, but a Christian legacy glorifies God and furthers His kingdom. Which one will you choose?
“We will not hide them from their descendants; we will tell the next generation the praiseworthy deeds of the Lord, his power, and the wonders he has done.” Psalm 78:4 (NIV).
Prayer

Lord, I pray for guidance on ensuring the legacy I leave for my family and future generations honors your will. Father, fill me with a longing to create a legacy that brings you honor and glory. I don’t always take the time to reflect on the ripple effects of my choices and how they impact those around me, so please help me cultivate a deeper awareness of my surroundings and my action. Amen.

Hearing of the markers on Schindler’s grave touched me. I’m sure he never imagined the impact he would have.
No kidding. May we all make those kind of impacts. Thanks Debbie and God bless

So good. I pray my legacy is one of faith and love, pointing to the Father with compassion. I know that is the legacy YOU are leaving, Yvonne!
Awww, thanks Jessica. I know you are leaving behind a Christ filled legacy. God bless.
This is so powerful, Yvonne. My city has a well-groomed cemetery laid out in blocks with several paved paths running between and alongside the grave markers. It’s a popular walking spot. I have family buried there. When I walk it, I’m fascinated by the various headstones, benches, and sculptures that adorn the graves. I’ve noticed one of them has a meaningful Scripture inscribed that speaks of his or her faith. I’ve asked myself, “what Bible verse would I choose for my headstone?” I haven’t decided yet, but your post motivates me to make that decision! Thanks so much.
That’s something to think about. Mine would be Romans 8:28. Thanks Candyce and blessings
